Antique Indonesian Carved Deer Architectural Temple Sculpture

About the Item

A rare and incredible Indonesian hand carved and painted red deer architectural salvaged temple ornament. Dating to the 19th century or earlier, hand-crafted in Southeast Asia, likely Bali, Java, possibly Burma, the antique religious folk art decorative building element - temple statue depicting a stag deer figure with real, natural four point antlers. Full body form standing atop base with pyramid, decorated in bas relief carving of the sun. Deer are commonly used in both Buddhism and Hinduism symbolism. A representation of this can be seen on many Buddhist monastery roof-tops which feature the Dharma wheel with two deer, a male and female gazing steadily at it, symbolizing fertility and virtue. While Thai Buddhism, symbolic meanings of deer include harmony, happiness, tranquility, and serenity, but also sensitivity and watchfulness. Finished on all sides, nicely detailed, and highly decorative, it makes for a fascinating curiosity, whimsical sculptural object, or interesting cultural artifact Dimensions: (approx) 16" high, 18" long, 8.5" wide Provenance / Acquisition: Acquired at Round Top Antique Fair from a long time Houston, Texas art and antiques dealer. Great antique condition. Museum quality. Presents well, with beautifully aged patina over the whole, highly desirable weathered, naturally distressed patina, worn and faded, retaining original antique character marks throughout. Nothing that detracts from the display, but only adds to the overall elegant warmth, rustic charm and rich historical depth that can only be acquired over very long periods of time.
