Antique Austrian Black Forest Roe and Chamois Hunt Trophies of Count Josef Hoyos

About the Item

These eight roe trophies and one chamois were taken by Graf (Count) Ernst Hoyos-Sprinzenstein and his son, Graf (Count) Josef Hoyos-Sprizenstein, in the last half of the 19th century, in Austria. Graf Josef (1839-1899) was the best friend and 'hunting companion' of Crown Prince Rudolf (son of Emperor Franz Josef and heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne). Graf Josef's official title in his service to the Crown Prince was "Real Secret Councillor and Chamberlain of His Majesty." In January, 1899, the Crown Prince, his young mistress and Graf Josef were together at the Crown Prince's hunting Schloss Mayerling. The Crown Prince killed himself after shooting his mistress, an event known as the "Mayerling Tragedy." It was Graf Josef who had to report the incident to Emperor Franz Josef. Measurements of these trophies range from 12" to 14.5" H x 3.5" to 5" W x 3" to 7" D. More images can be shared by request, as the limit on each listing is only ten images-- one trophy in particular features a label on the back with handwritten notes which revealed the origin of these pieces. Part of the European hunt collection presented by Laurier Blanc, this collection of antique hunting trophies from Royal and Noble European families has been examined and appraised by James Supp of Coronado Trading Company, who is best known for his work with the PBS production "Antiques Roadshow." All pieces in this collection have been examined and appraised and come with a "Certificate of Authenticity" document.
