Antique Tajik Silk Embroidered Ruband Bridal Veil
About the Item
Antique Ruband veils such as this example, which are hand-embroidered in silk on a cotton foundation, were used to cover the bride's face when she moved to the groom's house, as well as during the various instances composing the wedding ceremony among the Tajik. The 'rubinon' rite is held when the bride first meets her husband's family. Her features were covered in order to shield her from the evil eye as well as the influence of other malicious spirits. The various relatives approach the bride one by one to give her the wedding gifts, lifting the veil in order to see her face.
The ornaments on Ruband embroideries have ancient Indo-Iranian roots. These include pre-Islamic symbols such as the Tree of Life with standing cockerels, peacocks or other bird motifs, fiery flowers or triangles. The upper part of the veil has a rectangular mesh which allows the bride to see. Richly embroidered Rubands such as this example are very rare, and were employed only by wealthy families. They were considered a family heirloom and passed from mother to daughter.
