Mid-Century Modern Pair of "Girafa" Chairs by Lina Bo Bardi, Brazil, 1986

About the Item

The Girafa chair, designed by Italian-Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi in 1986, is a distinctive piece of furniture that features a tall, slender backrest resembling a giraffe's neck. The chair is made from wood, and is supported by a tripod base. This pair was manufactured by the Marcenaria Barauna workshop in São Paulo and designed by Bo Bardi, Ferraz and Suzuki as part of their Casa do Benin Restaurant in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. The chair was designed with an emphasis on ergonomics and comfort, and its unique shape allows for a comfortable sitting position while providing support for the upper body. The chair's backrest curves around the body, creating a cozy and enveloping feeling for the user. In addition to its functional qualities, the Girafa chair is also aesthetically striking, with its sleek lines and minimalist design. It has become an iconic piece of Brazilian furniture design, and is often featured in museums and design collections around the world. Lina Bo Bardi, who was born in Italy in 1914 and moved to Brazil in the 1940s, was known for her innovative approach to architecture and design, and the Girafa chair is a testament to her unique vision and creativity.
