16th Century Florence Palace Table

About the Item

In the beginning the table was a movable furniture with removable feet, easy to build and disassemble. Most of the 15th and 16th century tables are built following the Roman cartibula principles that is a plate standing on two large stands secured by a crossbar. The lengthy and elegant plate of this Italian Renaissance palace table stands on a simple belt. The two fan-shaped feet are finely carved and depict two scrolls and acanthus framing an anthémion and decorative knob. The lower part of the bracket-shaped feet is achieved by strong and beautifully detailed lion paws. Operating a nice balance between ornaments and plain surfaces the table’s crossbar is sober and robust.

  • Rare Renaissance Table from Hugues Sambin School
    Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
Excellent state of condition This table has a movable top and supports as did the models from the Middle Ages, and yet presents a decorative dimension characteristic of the Renaissance furniture, which the riche and most inventive type was the “fan-shaped” table, probably coming from Italy. The central pilaster represents a term enriched by a foliage motif, including a laurel-crowned femal face on the first support and a male face on the second one. The high quality of this embossed work adds a touch of sophistication. Noteworthy, we can see on the backside of the fan-shaped supports, the same patterns as a lower relief, an extremely rare occurrence. This Ceremonial Table can be moved, and can be used following the occasions , like a small dinner or a grand reception for exemple. We can admit that this table with a movable top and fan shaped movables supports is the single model known today. Furthermore the richness of ornamentation, the carefulness and high quality of the sculpture denote that this table has its origin in Hugues Sambin...

  • 16th Century Renaissance Two-Bodied Cabinet
    Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
Former collection Altounian At the beginning of the reign of Henri II (1547-1559) the furniture’s ornamentation evolves. The few medieval motifs that were still used are eventually relinquished. Furniture becomes more sober showcasing moulded panels and perfect architecture. Cabinet-makers use ornaments such as curved fluted or plain columns, feather quills, roses or winged putti heads. High-relief carving becomes more scarce and compositions lighter. To that end cabinet-makers draw inspiration from Fontainebleau motifs filtering them and adapting them to French taste. During this period cabinet-makers turn into a kind of architects. Indeed the architectural balance of furniture is the centre of their concerns. The study of Antic formulas is then a necessity. From this care given to proportions appear refined cabinets with pure lines. This style is characteristic of the reign of Henri II and disappears soon after under the regency of Catherine de Medici (1560-1574) when an abundance of high and low-relief ornaments comes back on furnitures. This two-bodies cabinet...
