Sunburst Top Dining Table by Gianni Moscatelli for ARREDOFORM, Italy ca 1965

About the Item

With its beautiful column base, this dining table has an aesthetic that is historic and modern at the same time. The different carved shapes of the wood on the column and the impeccable joinery illustrate the originality of the designer, Gianni Moscatelli. The solid wood is shaped into elegant forms effortlessly with smooth surfaces, a sign of high-quality craftsmanship. The beautifully sculpted edges and inlay testify to Moscatelli’s artistry, especially the symmetrical legs that give the table an elegant look. The sculpted base consists of a central leg stand, supported by four legs with rounded feet. Since this table was made in the heyday of the mid-century, the design as a whole lacks heavy ornamentation and instead focuses on the natural beauty of the wood, accentuated by the sunburst detail of the tabletop. The round sunburst tabletop is the evident main feature of this design. A sunburst is a design or figure commonly used in architectural ornaments and design patterns; it consists of rays or "beams" radiating out from a central point in the manner of sunbeams. Thanks in great part to an emphasis on wood as the sole material, this table has avoided associations with cold industrialization and machine aesthetics of the era. • German Oak Dining Table with Triangular Top, Germany 1960s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
Organically shaped, clean-lined and elegantly simple are three terms that best describe this massive dining table. The evolution of mid-century design in postwar Germany was a direct consequence of accepting, continuing, and further developing the ideas of the predecessing movements. It was, in a way, a “softer” version of the modern movement by adopting natural, organic forms. The distinctive triangular ‘guitar pick’ shape of this table is quite popular thanks to its functional and stylish look. While dining tables are furniture pieces that are generally associated with their functional role, exceptional Mid-Century Modern models like this one manage to stand out next to their utilitarian role. This table’s curved shape and generous surface area make it a perfect dining table, while not compromising on aesthetics. The 19th century Biedermeier furniture design was based on utilitarian principles with a simple and elegant style, and mid-century modernism carried these principles well into the 20th century. The mid-century German style’s construction utilized the ideal of truth through materials. As a result, the wood grain was the key decorative element in the design. Following this ideal, this table’s top...
