About the Item
Painting by Hermann Baisch (Dresden 1846-Karlsruhe 1894), “Farmers taking a Rest”, oil on canvas
Hermann Baisch was a German painter and illustrator who specialized in landscapes and animals. He was one of the first artists in Germany to work in the French influenced "paysage intime" style.
In 1868 he went to Paris and studied with Jules Dupré who introduced him to the Barbizon School.
After completing his studies in Paris he went to Munich where he started studying at a private painting school operated by Adolf Lier.
In 1880 he relocated to Karlsruhe where he became professor for animal painting at the Grand-Ducal Baden Art School. There he built an open air studio, which he even equipped with some life animals to give his students the possibility to paint from nature.
The Art Museum in Karlsruhe owns some of his paintings.

- William Keith Original Tonal Oil Painting of California Misty Woodland LandscapeLocated in Tustin, CAOriginal oil painting on canvas, Tonal-style landscape painting by listed, deceased, famous artist, William Keith (1838-1911). Painting features a group of majestic trees near a pond of water at deep dusk or early dawn. A lone shepherd, seated beneath a tree, watches over his herd of sheep as they make their way down to the water. The tone is relaxed and misty, with softly blurred details and an air of hazy tranquility. William Keith was a Scottish-American painter famous for his plein air California landscapes, characterized by how the landscapes captured feelings and emotions, rather than actual details. He was neither pure Realist nor pure Impressionist. During the 1870s, Keith painted a number of six-by ten-foot panoramas, including "Kings River Canyon" (Oakland Museum, originally owned by Governor Leland Stanford) and "California Alps" (Mission Inn, Riverside). These competed with paintings of similar size and subject matter by famous California landscape painters Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Hill. Keith is associated with Tonalism and the American Barbizon school of painting...Category
