Louis Wolchonok, 'Rockport Harbor', gouache, c. 1950. Signed in ink, lower right. A fine, modernist work, with fresh colors, on cream wove drawing paper, in excellent condition. Sheet size: 10 9/16 x 8 5/8 inches. Matted to museum standards, unframed.
Rockport is a seaside town in, Massachusetts, located approximately 40 miles northeast of Boston at the tip of the Cape Ann peninsula. It is directly east of Gloucester and is surrounded on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean. Since the mid-1800s, artists had been retreating to Rockport for inspiration and shared community, and by 1900 many artists had established summer studios there. The Rockport Art Association, founded in 1921 as an artist's cooperative, became a gathering place of New England artists of the 20th century. Winslow Homer, Childe Hassam, Edward Hopper, John Sloan, Maurice Prendergast, John Twachtman, Frederick Mulhaupt, William Morris Hunt, Theresa Bernstein, William Meyerowitz, Aldro Hibbard, Anthony Thieme, Antonio Cirino, Marguerite Pearson, Lester Stevens, Paul Strisik and Donald Mosher all had vital and enduring connections in Rockport.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Louis Wolchonok (1898-1973) was a painter, muralist, printmaker, and graphic artist. He studied at the National Academy of Design, Cooper Union, City College of New York, Julian Academy (Paris), and the Brooklyn Academy of Fine Arts.
Wolchonok taught at the City College of New York and the Craft Students League from the 1930s until the last year of his life, authoring four highly regarded books on drawing, composition, and design. His work was exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Academy of Design, and the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art and is included in the collections of Johnson Museum of Art (Cornell University), National Academy of Design, and Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Louis Wolchonok
Louis Wolchonok was an author of art books, etcher, painter of townscapes, landscapes, figures, muralist and graphic artist. Wolchonok was a social realist artist who worked in watercolors, oils and prints. He studied at the National Academy of Design, The Cooper Union, the City College of New York, Académie Julian in Paris, and the Brooklyn Academy of Fine Arts. He taught drafting at the City College of New York from 1930; and design, painting and etching at the Craft Students League, YWCA, New York, from 1932. He authored The Art of Three Dimensional Design: How to Create Space Figures, Lessons in Pictorial Composition and Design for Artist and Craftsmen.

Born in Paris, France in 1914, Andre Delfau became an internationally acclaimed stage, set and costume designer who worked world-wide from the 1930s to the 1980s.
