Norman Edgar Hubert
1950s British black and white abstract by Norman Edgar Hubert

1955

About the Item

Norman Edgar Hubert (British, 1906 – 1985) Geometric abstract in black and white Signed and dated ‘E Hubert 55’ (on the reverse) Gouache on black paper 25.3/8 x 20.3/4 in. (64.3 x 53 cm.) Abstract painter, born Norman Edgar Hubert in Billingshurst, Sussex, and one of the mysterious curiosities of modern British painting. He was at school at Sherborne, and after studying art at University of Reading, 1924–6, was at the Slade School of Fine Art, 1926–9 (gaining a certificate for drawing, 1926–7). Henry Tonks was among his teachers and he shared rooms with William Townsend, in whose journals he appears. Although he socialized with such painters as Geoffrey Tibble, William Coldstream and Rodrigo Moynihan and was involved in the Objective Abstractions group in the mid-1930s, Hubert was a shy man who became a recluse, exhibited little and whose work is generally unknown. He exhibited with the AIA, 1939; in La Jeune Peinture en Grande Bretagne, at La Galerie René Drouin in Paris, 1948, exhibiting four gouache compositions, one lent by the British Council, which organised the show; in the same year having solo show at the Mayor Gallery, where he had begun exhibiting in 1946, offering 20 Compositions, I–XX, “prices on application”.

  • Modern British, mid century, abstract gouache painting by William Black
    Located in Petworth, West Sussex
William Black (British, fl.66-69) Burial Mound Gouache Inscribed with title, signed and dated `Burial Mound William Black 69’ (lower edge) 13.1/2 x 21.1/8 in. (34.3 x 53.7 cm.) William Black is a little known and underrated member of the St Ives artist group who, having worked as an architect after the Second World War, went on to work as an artist following the inheritance of money in the early 1950s. He was a self taught artist, producing numerous deconstructivist sculptures in the 1960s. He moved to St Ives in Cornwall where he knew artists such as Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Naum Gabo. There is a clear architectural element to the sculptures that he made . They illustrate an assemblage of fragmented shapes and forms of a deconstructivist nature. William Black’s artwork is very much rooted in the time and Cornish School so one can see elements from those such as Wilhelmina Barns Graham , George Hammond Steel...
