About the Item

A New Model This graphite pencil drawing ‘Neo Deco – 01-06-23’ serves as a caesura after my long series of landscapes and cityscapes. The last one depicting the Nieuwe Kerk in The Hague I sold yesterday. That’s a nice conclusion and I think it’s time to do something new or is it? Hmm, perhaps not. A return to female forms hardly is but the model surely is. You don’t know her yet. I know her from Instagram where she asked me to portray her. Her slender looks impressed me and during my landscape frenzy I looked at her reference pictures she sent me. I picked this one because of the attractive folds in the towel she holds in front of her body. A Straight Approach Looking back at some recent nudes I made I saw it’s quite some time since I drew them angularly. I think a real angular one was Neo Deco – 26-01-23. For that pose by my regular model I used heavy back lighting, something that’s completely missing here though. In fact the light in the photo comes from the front. Lucky for me the shadows in the folds and limbs were equally interesting. My choice for straight cubist contour delineations was right I think. They represent the straightness of the creases and wrinkles perfectly. Because of her slender appearance her body also seems to complement this straight approach. Neo Deco? So there you have it, a new one in the Neo Deco series. A kind of? To call it cubism would only deliver me people chasing after me stating it’s not cubism at all. No Picasso multi-perspectivism whatsoever. Is it decorative of nature? Hence the ‘deco’-link one might say. I think this style of mine is a perfect combination of impressionism, realism, art deco and cubism. If it’s roundish I call it roundism. I think the Deco-aspect shows in the repetitive series of diagonals in the towel folds on her belly. They contrast the vertical position of her body. The extrapolations into the negative space also are typical deco, I think. I rest my case now for the time being. SEO and the N-Word Sometimes I feel a bit clumzy but then again all -isms also are in their own particular way. In fact I’d rather not call it anything. But hey, I’m a struggling artist and I have to craft nifty SEO-proof texts in order to be found. In the past I simply called them ‘nude’ plus a date so I could tell one from the other. However, it proved to be an unsuccesful strategy. Social media sentinels often blocked me because of the ‘N-word’. Sadly I must conclude this art statement with this bitter conclusion. Facebook and Instagram forced me to this practise of alternative namegiving. I don’t mind. ‘Neo Deco’ is more specific than ‘nude’ and I like the sound of it. Any alternatives? • Neo Deco – 03-12-22, Drawing, Pencil/Colored Pencil on Paper

Bristol Again This graphite pencil drawing ‘Neo Deco – 03-12-22’ follows after a couple of colored pencil drawings. These were fun to do but I wanted to get back to basics and to me that has always been black and white. There was another reason too. Some months ago I drew ‘Art Deco Nude – 05-08-22’ on Ingres paper, which I didn’t use for a long time. Next to the love for Ingres I was a bit worried how my new Faber-Castell pencils would react on Bristol paper. I did a couple of tests then on demand of Brugman Art who gave me these to try out. Initially they felt a bit sticky on Bristol and a bit too smooth. Today I have to withdraw this statement and replace it with newer and better experiences. Gradients My major concern was whether I could get smooth tonal gradients such as the ones in my Roundism series. Now that I tried to combine Pitt Graphite Matt with Bristol I see I can. The gradients are just fine whereas I can blacken the paper even more than with regular graphite pencil. It is even susceptible for rubbing out. Furthermore it gives me the ability to find heftier expressions, covering the total tonal bandwith from pure black to pristine white. Neo Deco The artistic motif itself was yet another smashing Walter Bird photo...

A Second One This graphite pencil drawing ‘Art Deco Nude – 06-08-22’ follows one day after the first, done with my new pencils. In fact, immediately after the completion of the first one I started the second in my studio at Brugman Art. However, finished a day later but within an hour in total. Surely this shows my enthusiasm. The Pitt Graphite Matt pencils and the Ingres paper to me are a perfect match. You have to know that I like to search for new ways to quickly put my ideas on paper. Charcoal simply is too stainy, even though it is quick and easy to correct. Pastel is also quick but falls off the Ingres paper quite easy without fixation. They are not very handy to carry around in my backpack as well. Pencils I easily can carry with my in my handy Derwent pencil folder. Deco Again This Deco title is a bit of a laugh really. Art Deco is a pre World War II art...

Movement Another graphite pencil drawing ‘Art Deco Nude – 23-08-22’, inspired by again a smashing picture by Walter Bird. The last drawing shows a seated lady. Contrasts are always on my mind though. Not in the style but in movement this time. What attracked me in the motif was the angular position of the female form. I am not sure whether she stood still like this but it looks like some ritual dance. I can ask my Spanish model Julia who is a dancer to strikes these kinds of poses. All induced by Walter! Extrapolate Them The bodily features almost took up a perfect square. However, I wanted to make sure I wasn’t going to end up with too much negative space around her. Therefor, extrapolating her features into the negative space came to my aid. The planes that are born from this process support the overall expression of her moves, I think. Some of them I hached up to complete darkness, other to midtones. Vice versa I did in the positive form as well. The most contrasting tonal values (completely light / dark) I placed within the body. I wanted only mildly distracting or diffuse the viewer’s attention. This way I found a perfect balance. Emotional and Expressive Someone on called...

A new coffee table book has just been released titled "Poster Child" The Psychedelic Art & Technicolor Life of David Edward Byrd. This original drawing is featured on page 57 of the book. This rare original 1973 drawing was used to create the poster for the Art Deco masterpiece in New York City, Radio City Music Hall. In 1973 The New York City Art Deco Exposition was held at Radio City Music Hall in New York to celebrate the extravagant re-opening and renovation of The New York City art Deco landmark Radio City Music Hall after an extensive renovation. I have also included a photo of the poster to show what the printed poster looked like, the color poster is not included in this sale. David Byrd created some of the most memorable Classic Theatre and Rock and Roll images from the 1960s and 70s. This is the first time that this rare original one of a kind drawing has been available for sale since it was first created over 40 years ago.
