About the Item

Even at the Mauritshuis This graphite pencil drawing ‘A Non AI-Driven Neo Deco Celebrity Nude – 09-03-23’ is something different or is it? Inspired by a smashing reference picture I was although I don’t know its origins. There are so many art deco pictures out there but I thank its creator anyway. So, nothing new compared to the last one already present in the series. I felt compelled to make a statement on artificial intelligence though. It seems it has creeped into the art world slowly but surely. Here and there I hear disturbing reports about AI-generated art works exposed as such in art competitions. The Mauritshuis lended the ‘Girl with the Pearl Earring’ to the Rijksmuseum for the big Vermeer exhibition. Lo and behold, in the empty slot there is one. Is handcrafted art crumbling into pieces? Just Another Algoritm So I tried out a couple of AI generating websites to see what the fuss is all about. On my mind was a cubist painting of a woman, cat and a window. Of course in the style of Corné Akkers but I also had it generate it for Juan Gris and Fernand Léger. Surprisingly they all looked the same. After some ponding over it hit me. What people consider to be intelligent, how artificial it may be, is yet another algoritm. In fact, I don’t think AI doesn’t exist as such. My works and those of other artists are just part of it. We all will be part of the stuff AI picks up in order to generate something that looks original. AI will be the finger of the wise to many a viewer, whereas the finger secretly points to the moon. That’s where artists dwell. Taste There is no real creative force at work, only combining images and texts already present on the internet. Okay, that’s not something really new, is it? Artists like me do that all the time. Eventually we stand on the shoulders of artistist predecessors. For example, Paul McCartney was chewing out a variation on a bourrée by Bach. So far so good. But why does AI-Driven art looks bland whereas real artists can offer new perspectives on things? I think it’s not about the aspect of choice. That can be driven by coincidence which I suspect AI uses all the time. An algoritm can flip a coin. Artists in the flesh also can but they have what AI lacks: taste! Another word for that is opinion of course. Does the series of algoritms include individual taste? I think not. That still is magically bestowed upon living beings. Haagse Punt When I come to think if it, it takes me back to my student years. In Leiden I was living above a bakery and they had the concept of the so-called ‘Haagse Punt’. Leftovers from the confectionery were thrown back into the mix again. In Holland we say ‘Haags’ (or The Hague-ish) and it stands for stinginess. Therefor the Haagse Punt was the cheapest slice of cake you could buy, being a perfect means to recycle things that would be otherwise thrown away. So, everything is in the mix and the result is something bland like Budweiser or Heineken. Many will like it but now I know the secret of those Frankenbrewers. They just average out taste so even Joe Sixpack likes it or should I say, doesn’t hate it? Conclusion I think in the long run original and creative thinkers need not worry about AI too much. Perhaps we can use it to be inspired by its outputs. On the other hand AI-generated art will only be appealing to those who only like a Bud or a Heiny. They will not be tempted to try out a specific and original Belgian trappist beer. The more people will post images and texts on the internet the more tasteless and bland AI output gets. That is my prediction. Nachgedanke I don’t see AI doing what happened to me. I was inspired by Zero 7’s song ‘In the Waiting Line’ whilst drawing this one. “Do you believe in what you see. Motionless wheel. Nothing is Realâ€

Bristol Again This graphite pencil drawing ‘Neo Deco – 03-12-22’ follows after a couple of colored pencil drawings. These were fun to do but I wanted to get back to basics and to me that has always been black and white. There was another reason too. Some months ago I drew ‘Art Deco Nude – 05-08-22’ on Ingres paper, which I didn’t use for a long time. Next to the love for Ingres I was a bit worried how my new Faber-Castell pencils would react on Bristol paper. I did a couple of tests then on demand of Brugman Art who gave me these to try out. Initially they felt a bit sticky on Bristol and a bit too smooth. Today I have to withdraw this statement and replace it with newer and better experiences. Gradients My major concern was whether I could get smooth tonal gradients such as the ones in my Roundism series. Now that I tried to combine Pitt Graphite Matt with Bristol I see I can. The gradients are just fine whereas I can blacken the paper even more than with regular graphite pencil. It is even susceptible for rubbing out. Furthermore it gives me the ability to find heftier expressions, covering the total tonal bandwith from pure black to pristine white. Neo Deco The artistic motif itself was yet another smashing Walter Bird photo...

Just Another Artistic Motif This graphite pencil drawing ˜Venus Lamenting “ 13-01-23 is a special one. It is an indictment of prudishness. My second to last one ˜Roundism “ 30-12-22 apparently shook up a bunch of people. Comments varied from great to ˜yet another tit pic. There also were prudes from various countries who scorned me for the subject nudity anyway. Throughout the years I became used to these reactions somehow. I also take into account the fact people from each and any nation are present on social media nowadays. With this variety comes a whole set of different opinions and views of life. I cherish them all. That is, as long as they cherish my opinion back. If they dont, then this art statement is for all those who lack the word reciprocity in their dictionary. Climbing the Barricades Personally I think the nude can be as much an artistic motif as any other. In fact I dont complain in the least about a world of other motifs. One could like to depict golden retrievers, red roses and other darling, save and sound themes. I see them on a daily basis on Instagram and Facebook among others. I probably wouldnt have made a big fuss because of contempt shown in the past. Thats what an artist is all about. I even like to provoke with my nudes a bit. A bit of sexiness but not too much. Just to be able to deny the presence of too much of it by underligning artistic aspects as well. Hmm, a bit of risque here an there. I love it! Why climb the barricades once again? Heres why. ArtKitchen In a dutch paper, called ˜NRC there was this item on Jeannette Dekeukeleires. She is the gallery owner of ArtKitchen in Amsterdam, known for its stimulating and provocative art...

Movement Another graphite pencil drawing ‘Art Deco Nude – 23-08-22’, inspired by again a smashing picture by Walter Bird. The last drawing shows a seated lady. Contrasts are always on my mind though. Not in the style but in movement this time. What attracked me in the motif was the angular position of the female form. I am not sure whether she stood still like this but it looks like some ritual dance. I can ask my Spanish model Julia who is a dancer to strikes these kinds of poses. All induced by Walter! Extrapolate Them The bodily features almost took up a perfect square. However, I wanted to make sure I wasn’t going to end up with too much negative space around her. Therefor, extrapolating her features into the negative space came to my aid. The planes that are born from this process support the overall expression of her moves, I think. Some of them I hached up to complete darkness, other to midtones. Vice versa I did in the positive form as well. The most contrasting tonal values (completely light / dark) I placed within the body. I wanted only mildly distracting or diffuse the viewer’s attention. This way I found a perfect balance. Emotional and Expressive Someone on called...
