About the Item

"Fight Back or Die" by Swedish American pulp artist Lorence Bjorklund (1913 - 1978) is an ink drawing on illustration board representing a male figure sitting on a rock firing his rifle towards his enemy somewhere in the "Wild West". Born in Minnesota, Bjorklund was best known for his western pulp illustrations. After finishing high school in 1931 he moved to Brooklyn to study commercial art at the Pratt Institute on a scholarship. During those years he began to support himself as an illustrator in the western pulp magazine industry by drawing pen and ink interior story illustrations. During a long and successful career, his illustrations were published in over 300 books, including some that Bjorklund authored. He is listed in the 1975 book Fifty Great Western Illustrators by Jeff Dykes. The artwork is an original illustration used in the pulp magazine's editing/publishing process with the artists initials on the lower right side of the drawing. Notations, labels, stamps and inscriptions to margins. Artist’s estate stamp to the versos. Varying toning, foxing, corner wear, uneven discolorations, glue and label residues throughout the compositions and focalized along the margins.
