Raymond Moretti (French, 1931 – 2005) Dancers at a jazz club Crayon on paper Signed and dated ‘Moretti 60’ (lower left) 17 x 23.1/4 in. (43 x 59 cm.) Raymond Moretti was a French abstract painter. Combining Hebrew letters, lines, and colors he created dynamic works, which flit in and out of abstraction. Born in Nice, France on July 23, 1931, he made a living creating lithographs for posters, magazine covers, and stamps. Deeply involved with jazz music, he had many famous musicians sit for him, including Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and Thelonious Monk. In the 1960s, the artist illustrated covers for a series of 12 highly sought-after jazz LPs called Moretti Verve. Notably, he created the French Judicial Police logo, which combines the head of a man with the head of a tiger. Moretti died on June 3, 2005 in Paris, France.

    Dean was born in 1934 of Jewish parents in a Berlin, Germany, that was falling prey to the Nazis. The family immigrated to New York City in 1938, and Dean was raised in the refugee community in Inwood. Dean's first show (ironically, in retrospect) was given him by the USIA in Brazil. In 1959, he returned to New York to work six months on, six months off in soil engineering and made art in the interims. He tried, and failed, to get into a Tenth Street Gallery. Studying painting at night with Andre Girard at City College pushed him over the edge, and in 1969 he committed himself to painting full time.
