Wangechi Mutu
Wangechi Mutu, lot of 3 unique small ink figurative drawings, contemporary art

2005

About the Item

Lot of three small ink drawings for sale: 1. I Thought I Would Let it All Out! 2. Boo Fucking Who! 3. The Beautiful Ones are not yet Born Wangechi Mutu's small-scale ink drawings demonstrate the artist’s exploration of violence and misrepresentation against women, specifically Black women in contemporary society. These drawings depict the feminine form with elongated limbs and distorted features. The figure’s faces are obscured, yet the text (and title of the work) implies it’s represenation. As described by Kathleen Linn on Mutu: “With third wave feminism’s intention to allow the space for a diversity of interpretations around feminism and the lived experience of women from all around the world Mutu’s work speaks poetically about the breadth and variety of feminisms and the effects of war, violence, poverty and greed on women and more broadly within society.”

Margot Glass explores the fragility of communication, and people’s natural drive to find narrative in even the most ordinary of objects. In her Envelopes series, Glass works in watercolor, pencil and silverpoint, using trompe l’oeil to highlight the paper as a still life element. The drawing becomes an object through close compositional cropping and the choice of stiff watercolor board. By omitting text, the artist adds a minimalist element to the vivid representation. • Signature Spitball Series of Julia Randall, Photorealist colored pencil drawing
    By Julia Randall
    Located in New York, NY
Julia Randall is in love with drawing, and uses her seductive technique to craft images that subtly challenge assumptions about corporeality, desire, and the natural world. Intersecting sensibilities activate her work; images are simultaneously erotic and humorous, beautiful and repulsive. Although she clearly operates in the realm of fantasy, Randall uses observation-based drawing and hyperrealistic technique to create images that are surreal and suggestive. Mysterious in tone, these "Under and Afloat" drawings hint at the fugitive nature of our passions, and the dreaded passage of time. Spatial convolutions and open-ended narratives allude to the confounding emotional layers that exist between people, and the enigmatic nature of desire, love and loss. In this vein, desire is ultimately ephemeral, but ironically drawn in fastidious detail.
