About the Item
Ott was part of a generation of painters at the end of the 19th century for whom drawing was the greatest mode of expression. This watercolor was painted at Loguivy in Bretagne where the artist lived from 1898 to 1900. Bretagne was in vogue with artists because of the work done by Paul Gauguin and Emile Bernard in Pont-Aven from 1886 to 1889. Ott was among the coterie of Henri Rivière, which worked under the influence of Japonisme, a term coined in 1872 by critic and artist Philippe Burty to refer to this pervasive influence on French art. Ott returned to Paris and exhibited at the Salon des Independants in 1901 and regularly thereafter until 1914.
