This is a stylized figurative abstract expressionist nude. This one is hand signed and dated. Carmen Louis Cicero (born 1926) is an American figurative abstract painter from Newark, New Jersey. Cicero attended the New Jersey State Teachers College (now Kean University) from 1947 to 1951. Cicero studied painting under Hans Hofmann and Robert Motherwell at Hunter College in 1953. He received an MFA from Montclair State University in 1991.Cicero started as an abstract painter and use automatism in his drawings of memories of places. In 1957, Cicero had his first solo show at the Peridot Gallery, New York, showing with fellow artists Louise Bourgeois and Philip Guston. In the early 1960s, Cicero’s canvases began to be populated with intense, expressionist figures. These works positioned him as one of the earliest figurative expressionist painters of his generation. In 1971 a studio fire destroyed the work still in his possession. He moved to New York to a studio loft on the Bowery and started over in a dramatically different figurative style. In the 1990s, Cicero's style changed again, from figurative expressionism to visionary realism/surrealism reminiscent of magic realism. His work spans three periods and styles Abstract Expressionism, Figurative Expressionism, and surrealist “visionary.” In the late 1970s and 1980s and produced a body of work that was well received both uptown on Madison Avenue and downtown during the heyday of the East Village art scene. He was represented by the Berta Walker Gallery. He lives in New York City and Truro on Cape Cod. He is also an accomplished jazz musician. Cicero taught painting at Sarah Lawrence College 1959 to 1968. Cicero was a professor of painting at Montclair State University from 1970 through 2001. A monograph, The Art of Carmen Cicero was published in 2013 by Schiffer Publishing in Atglen, PA. 'Modern Dancers', pastel, ink and gouache on fine art paper by French artist, singer and sculptor, Mick Micheyl (1964). Two elegant young men are depicted in a graceful dancing pose, arms outstretched, their lithe bodies so agile and limber. Perhaps one of the dancers was her friend, Philippe, to whom the painting is dedicated on the bottom. The dedication says: 'For you Philippe, all my friendship'. Signed: 'Mick Micheyl'. The work has been newly framed and glazed after having been acquired in the S. of France. It is in fair vintage condition commensurate with age showing minor blemishing on the paper. After having received training at the School of Fine Arts in Lyon she became a painter and decorator in the theatre but then commenced a career in the musical activities of a theatrical troupe. She won the ABC competition in Paris in 1949 with a song, Le Marchand de Poésie, which she composed herself. She then performed in many cabarets: L'Échelle de Jacob, Harlequin and Liberty's. In the 1950s she was one of the most important French cabaret singers of that period. One of her titles, 'Un Gamin de Paris', became one of the French standards and also performed by Yves Montand and Robert Clary...

Image size: 15.75”H x 10”W This extraordinary artist was born in 1908 in Milan, Italy, of a Swiss father and an Italian mother. He studied at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan and did graphic design there before deciding to move to Zürich, Switzerland, where he opened a design studio, which he operated for seven years. While on a visit to the United States in 1938, Giusti was induced to stay by the several excellent commissions that were offered to him, including the opportunity to collaborate with Herbert Matter on the design of the Swiss pavilion at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Giusti is well known in Europe and America for his architecture and sculpture, as well as his graphics. He studied architecture in Milan and worked at it from time to time, producing stunning examples of contemporary design. For more than four decades in America, and before that in Italy and Switzerland, George Giusti’s graphic designs have graced the covers of Time, Fortune, Holiday and other major magazines, as well as most of the publications of the United States Information Agency, and Giusti had a twelve-year design association with Geigy Pharmaceuticals. He has done advertising and graphic designs, illustrations, trademarks, client and employee publications, package designs for major corporations, and drawings. He has succeeded to the extent that his designs are consistently ahead of their time. It is Giusti’s expressed intention to build a bridge between fine art and art for commercial use. He disdains the terms “fine” and “commercial” as defining a distinction which should not exist. Art is art, he believes, whatever its purported use.
