Mother Nursing Her Baby

circa 1920s

About the Item

'Mother Nursing Her Baby', pencil on art paper, by French artist, Guillaume Dulac (circa 1920s). An artist known for his exquisite drawings - many are sketches for his larger oil paintings or other works, this piece's beauty lies once again in its simplicity and evident affection for its subjects. In the upper right hand corner a little sketch of the father looking on lovingly appears. The restraint, precision and elegance of the lines demonstrate a complete mastery of his art. This piece is in very good overall condition. All things considered, and given its nearly 100 years, it is notable for its state of preservation. The artwork has been newly framed and glazed. Although the artwork is unsigned, our gallery holds virtually the entire remaining collection of this artist's sketches and memorabilia and therefore, its provenance is impeccable. If desired, a gallery-generated certificate of authenticity will be included with the purchase. A series of Dulac's sketches may be acquired from our gallery on this platform to create a set to enhance a corridor or stairway of your home or workplace. Please closely view the accompanying photos to best appreciate its qualities. Upon request a video of the artwork may be provided. About the Artist: Guillaume Dulac (1883-1929). This is a historical piece from a French artist born in the 19th century. He was a close associate of other well known artists, Charles Camoin and Albert Marquet. He exhibited his works in Paris' Salon des Indépendents in 1905, in the Salon de l'Union Artistique of Toulouse in 1908-1910 and had an artistic presence in the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. His last exhibit was in the Salon des Tuileries in June of 1929. In December of that same year, his body was recovered having drowned in the Seine river and is now in the famous Père-Lachaise cemetery. Because of the quality of his art, his works have been sold at auction and collected internationally. In La Ciotat, France, near Marseille, there is a street named after this artist: l'Avenue Guillaume Dulac. 'Temple Official', pencil and watercolour on paper by Robert Taylor Pritchett (1882). This is the artist's portrait of a financial official in a Cantonese temple in Guangzhou, China in the latter half of the 19th century. His garment is typical of that of a senior civil servant of the Chinese government. Clothes were designed to indicate rank and status, becoming so distinct that the wearer’s position could be ascertained at a glance. During his second career as an artist, Pritchett traveled widely in the Pacific region in the 1880s. This artwork has been professionally restored and cleaned to preserve it for decades to come and therefore in good overall condition. It has also been newly framed and glazed. The artist has written 'The Treasurer & Temple' and '5 Geni Temple, Canton Jan. 22 1882' on the lower left and right hands of the artwork. Upon request a video of the work may be provided. • Japanese Art Ukiyo-e Figurative Painting, Tomimoto Toyohina, Edo period
    Located in Segovia, ES
Bijing-Ga series XXVII (Nº 27) Title: Tomomoto Toyohina Tomimoto Toyohina was a much sought-after geisha (entertainer) who performed narrative ballads accompanied by the shamisen. She was one of several non-prostitute beauties, including teahouse waitresses, whom Utamaro depicted repeatedly in the early to mid 1790s. She appears here with a brush in hand, dressed and combed with simple elegance. This composition is from a six-print series comprising half-length portraits of famous beauties (Famous beauties of Edo). Utamaro elevated Tomimoto Toyohina to the status of one of the three most renowned beauties of her age (together with Okita and Ohisa). She was from a prominent family of musicians that provided entertainment in the Yoshiwara. Toyohina’s appeal undoubtedly was as much due to her appearance as to her skills in singing, and Utamaro’s celebration of her would have further elevated the status of an already well-known lineage. This image is part of the bijin-ga series (“Pretty women”) drawn by Mario BGil, based in the Kitigawa Utamaro woodblock print...

Bijin-ga series XXI (Nº 21) Title: The courtese Hinakoto of the Hyôgorô House of Edo The courtesan Hinakoto is depicted by smoking tobacco. She takes the pipe delicately in her left hand and, in her right hand, she seems to be holding a “uchiwa” (rigid hand fan) that comes out from the bottom of the drawing, decorated with written calligraphy. Some strands of hair that fall on her temple and her scant clothing show that the painter has surprised her in a relaxed moment in which she does not lose her elegance and slenderness. This image is part of the bijin-ga series (“Pretty women”) drawn by Mario BGil, based in the Kitigawa Utamaro woodblock print...
