Peter Collins ARCA - Signed and Framed Original 1978 Pastel. Presented in a card mount and metallic frame. Signed and dated. On wove. Condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Some light scuffing to frame. Peter Collins A.R.C.A (1923-2001)
Provenance: The Late Peter & Georgette Collins Collection - 'The Contents of Stanley Studios, Chelsea'
Peter Collins was born in 1923 and his first job was in the commercial studio of an advertising agency, during which time he attended art school in the evening. His career was interrupted by World War II and in 1943, he entered the army, serving in the Royal Artillery where he was attached to the Education Corps teaching Painting and Drawing and also holding an appointment as part-time teacher at St. Martin’s School of Art.
After the war, Peter won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art 1947-1950. He went on to work as a commercial artist, producing iconic travel posters for British Railways and British European Airways. He also worked as a designer for ICI and Shell, and held the position of Art Director at Odhams Press. In the 1960’s Peter and his wife Georgette converted a group of buildings in Balcombe, Sussex which became ‘Balcombe Galleries’. In 1975 they acquired Stanley Studios in Chelsea, which was scheduled for demolishment and redevelopment. Purpose built artist studios were converted into single residence and over the next two decades they filled the spaces with paintings, antiques, curios and sculpture. Stanley Studios boasted a considerable cultural pedigree, having been a work space for artists such as Jack Smith, Rodrigo Moynihan and Elizabeth Frink.
The collection harks back to a golden age when Georgette and Peter Collins were immersed in Chelsea’s Bohemian art scene.

Peter Collins ARCA
With a fondness for life drawing, Peter Collins ARCA was perhaps a natural choice for the bikini-clad inhabitants of the pages of a holiday brochure. Collins's first job was at an advertising agency, in the commercial studio, while he attended evening art classes. World War II interrupted his career and he joined the Royal Artillery (of the British Army), teaching painting and drawing in the Education Corps, while simultaneously teaching at St Martin's School of Art, part time. Following the war, Collins studied at the Royal College of Art, winning a scholarship. Leaving in 1950, he then worked as a commercial artist producing some well-known posters for clients including British Railways and British European Airways. He was the Art Director at Odhams Press and spent time designing for both ICI and Shell. With his wife Georgette, he created the 'Bacombe Galleries' in Sussex, converting a group of buildings. In 1975, they again converted buildings, this time Stanley Studios in Chelsea, which were scheduled for redevelopment; many artists had worked there, probably the most famous being Elizabeth Frink. Combining an artist's studio and a single residence at Stanley Studios, the Collins’ were immersed in Chelsea's art scene and proceeded to fill the place with art, antiques, sculptures and curios.

Furthermore, Helleu cleverly alludes to See's own artistic output with a backdrop of vibrant floral blooms, enlivening the canvas and complementing the greens and blues of the peacock feather adorning her hat. The portrait is all the more significant thanks to its provenance. It was previously in the collection of A. Alfred Taubman, one of America's most successful entrepreneurs and one-time owner of Sotheby's. Considering Taubman encountered some of the most noteworthy and beautiful works of art ever made through his auction house, the fact that he chose this portrait by Helleu to grace his collection is a testament to its import. Born in Brittany in 1859, Helleu moved to Paris in 1876 in order to study at the École des Beaux-Arts.
