Arman The Night of the Mikados Hommage to Van Gogh: Starry Night

1992

About the Item

Arman, La Nuit des Mikados, Starry Night: Van Gogh 1992 Accumulation of brushes and acrylic paint on canvas. Unique work. Signed on the lower right side on the edge. Referenced at the Arman Studio in New York under the number APA #: 8027.92.002. "Starry Night" is one of the most famous paintings by Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh. The painting represents what Van Gogh could see and extrapolate from the room he occupied in the asylum of the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole monastery in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in May 1889. Often touted as one of the artist's masterpieces, the painting has now been housed at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City since 1941. For the painter, "the night is much more alive and richly colored than the day". Thus, this work is based on the direct observations of Van Gogh and on his imagination, memories, and emotions. Almost a hundred years after Van Gogh made one of his masterpieces, Arman decided to make a series called "Starry Nights". It was for him a return to basics, an exercise in style, the emergence of a will and discipline. Dazzled at a young age by Van Gogh's work, the artist never shied away from this influence. Arman also signs his works with his first name in homage to Van Gogh. Thus, Arman chose between different masterpieces of the Dutch artist "Starry Night" to realize this series of tribute works.

  • Already Gone - Minimalist Landscape Painting
    By Mike Gough
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
Gough’s interest in the elusive quality of memory has always been an invariable interest in his art practice. Rooted in memories of his upbringing in Newfoundland, Gough’s paintings are autobiographical but carry universal narratives. In the absence of detail there is an opportunity for one’s own memories to develop. An expansive solitude and sense of isolation is met with a universal feeling of what it means to belong. This unique 16 inch square mixed media painting on panel explores our relationship with memory and the natural world. This piece is signed by the artist on the back and is wired and ready to hang. The sides are painted white and the artwork does not require framing. Free local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable Continental U.S. and international shipping available. This artwork comes with a certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery. At its core, his practice explores how our relationship with the natural world connects and defines us. Working in mixed media, he endeavors to create familiar meditative spaces that exhibit a personal journey, but simultaneously invite the viewer to insert themselves in the narrative. These paintings partially stem from a fear of memory loss as a result of experiences with Alzheimer’s in his family. Not only does the painting process exercise Gough’s memory, but the paintings themselves act as records of his experience becoming a blend of reality and idealism. They are not painted from photographs; the places are not precisely rendered and the experiences are not accurately told, but they are Gough’s authentic recollection of them. The intent of his work is to create a patchwork map of memories as a guide back to the authenticity of human feeling.
