The Burlap Series - May 2022
Burlap is historically a very utilitarian material. I can’t help but always think of a sack of potatoes. It’s been used as sandbags to resist rising flood waters, camouflage, landscaping, and even as the final hood on one condemned to a beheading. Nothing overly sophisticated. But for an artist this invites a freedom to stretch, unravel, cut, burn, and slice the material in ways I might not if it was an expensive Belgian linen. The fact that it is burlap influences how I feel,
think, and work long before the brushes start pushing paint. When I begin one of these paintings I’m starting with something extremely crude and fragile.
My goal is to methodically chip away bit by bit until something refined and unexpected appears. There is a thrill in turning something common into something elegant, soulful and fun. This series also reminds me of certain pets. Not the purebreds. These are the runts and rescue animals that shouldn’t be alive but somehow skirted death and wormed their way into a new existence. Often shaggy and torn on the edges, but their hearts are full and thumping with life.

Kurt Herrmann
Kurt Herrmann is a painter from the mountains of Pennsylvania who does both figurative and abstract work, but above all he is a colorist at heart. Although his exhibition schedule is increasingly international, Herrmann’s rural Pennsylvania roots continue to influence his work. “I’m very aware of the fact that even if a painting was initially inspired by something exotic, or an extremely personal event on the other side of the planet, all my work is filtered through my studio in the hills of Appalachia,” he explains. “The colors, silence, space, seasons, landscape, even the rednecks impact everything I make. It’s inescapable.”
