Lee Smith
Cat Woman, Original Painting

2023

About the Item

Artist Comments
Artist Lee Smith offers an anthropomorphic cat woman that blurs the lines between human, animal, reality, and fantasy. The piece evokes a positive, uplifting, and deeply contemplative mood. The stunning portrait of the lady with flowing blue hair merges seamlessly with the body of a sitting cat. "Golden cat statues emphasize the regal and divine nature of this being," shares Lee. The golden metallic stars flow down from above to represent hope, while unidentifiable faces of people float in and out of focus.

About the Artist
Artist Lee Smith combines abstract, primitive, expressionist, and gritty contemporary art in her work. “My style is greatly influenced by years spent in CGI production and an unapologetic love for the daily comics,” says Lee. As a keen observer, she finds her inspiration in the social aspects of life. Her work represents human emotions and portrays these emotions by illustrating the animal world, often using those popular companions—cats and dogs. In her long professional career, Lee has worked as a newspaper layout artist, a visual merchandising specialist, a freelance graphic artist, a technical illustrator, and an art director. Lee retired from the corporate world ten years ago to concentrate on her art career. “Although I studied art in college, I prefer to describe myself as 'self-taught.' Years of irreplaceable hands-on experience have provided an extensive and invaluable continuing education in the arts,” says Lee. When building her current home in Oregon, she added a small studio that she keeps organized and clutter-free. She wears her trusty paint-covered denim overall when working, and typically listens to audiobooks or podcasts. “I have dozens of paintbrushes in cans all over the studio, but I have only about 10 favorites that I always use.”

The world that I live in is uncertain, unstable, but I have to keep going and find something that can comfort me. This work is talking about the uncomfortable moment, but hopeful future, at the same time. This piece is made by layering Korean mulberry paper on a wooden panel with homemade flour glue. Then I apply a glue base. Next, I draw my sketch, and trace it on the paper. Then I paint three or four layers of a background color using pigments and glue base. Lastly, I paint the animal subject in fine detail, which takes most of time. The painting is on a cradled wood panel with finished edges. It comes ready to hang.

    About the Artist
Heejin has been been drawing for as long as she can remember. She grew up with a serious illness and spent much of her childhood in the hospital. Drawing served as an outlet for her, bringing her peace and distraction. Heejin says there was no doubt as she grew up that she wanted to be an artist. She studied oriental painting extensively as a college student in South Korea and then went on to study art therapy in graduate school.

At the center of the pictorial space are two creatures boldly outlined in black with their backs to each other. One is bright red, and to his left, is his opponent in dark yellow. The artist calls this a fight between two dogs, a word-play when said in Spanish. On the canvas we find splashes of color, chalk and other unique lines by the artist.
