Paul Lamantia
Untreated they can do great harm

1977

About the Item

Paul LaMantia, who is often associated with the Imagists, has works in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and The Collection of Jean Dubuffet, Paris, France. Paul LaMantia is widely known in Chicago for his intense, often excoriating drawings and paintings. A student of Briggs Dyer at the School of the Art Institute in the ’60s, LaMantia was a daring and wildly inventive young artist who also attracted the attention of Jean Dubuffet, who asked him to come to Paris to swap ideas. His hallucinatory vision is inhabited by a comically disturbing mix of sinister creatures. A bird or bug-like being with multiple heads shares the stage atop a glass floor with a human/non-human creature sporting a horned helmet, a lizard type animal and other varmints. The artist insists that although these nightmarish inventions are not of the real world, they are in fact about the real world. Garish color, strong black outlines and a composition that fits the tradition of horror vacuii (fear of open space) characterize this drawing. A variety of media were utilized to execute his work. LaMantia’s rarely seen early drawings are outrageous, beautiful and disturbing. Paul LaMantia participated in these exhibits: Selections from the Permanent Collection: Made in Chicago and Chicago's Bauhaus Legacy Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA) Subconscious Eye, Face Forward: The Art of the Self-Portrait Printworks Gallery. Global Blindnese, Packer Schopf Gallery Paul LaMantia has Exhibited with these artists: Alexander Archipenko, Morris Barazani, Richard Hunt, Richard Haas, Carole Harmel, Michiko Itatani amongst others.

  • Mixed Media Textile Assemblage Collage Painting on Wood Yanira Collado, Miami
    Located in Surfside, FL
Yanira Collado (Dominican, American, 1975 ) "Que Ya Estan En El Olvido" Mixed Media unique fabric and painting assemblage collage on plywood Textile, clothing and found material on a custom-made frame. COA signed by the artist on 11/27/2020. Provenance: Oolite Arts, Miami Beach, where Collado was a resident artist. DIMENSIONS: H: 30" W: 24" As a child, Collado traveled between social structures: from Brooklyn, New York where she was born; to the Dominican Republic; to Miami, where her mother worked to become a tailor. Her use of construction materials summons the perception of a displaced personal and public history. She is a Caribbean African American artist with a Feminist leaning. In her practice, Collado displays an awareness of language conveyed through a keen analysis of identity, the latter referenced in her use of reclaimed literary texts and textiles, simultaneously opposed by various construction materials: wood, concrete, masonry brick, iron, and drywall. Materials with inherent geographic histories, processes, and economies imply varying degrees of personalized and public memory. "My connections are grounded to an alternate imagination: a Caribbean imagination and an alchemic consciousness. The Dominican Republic is a culturally rich country. Our musical narratives, folkloric traditions, oral histories, spiritual and supernatural beliefs are complex and embedded in our everyday life. All these components shaped my perceptions, sensibilities, and life experiences. I am always seeing the world through a Caribbean lens". Her artist residency fellowships include Bridge Red Art Center, North Miami, FL (2013-present), Project Row Houses, Houston, TX (2018), Oolite Arts, Miami Beach, FL (2019 – present), and the Joan Mitchell Foundation residency in New Orleans, LA (2020). She was awarded a South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship in 2021, and Ellie Creator Grant from Oolite in 2019, first place in the 2013 South Florida Biennial at the Art and Cultural Center/Hollywood, FL, and a Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship in 2018. Her work has been featured in group shows around the country including Perez Art Museum, Miami, FL; El Museo del Barrio, New York, NY; PRIZM Art Fair, Miami, FL; Storage Project Space, New York, NY; Oolite Arts, Miami Beach, FL; Project Row Houses, Houston, TX; Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, FL; Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, Florida International University, Miami, FL; The Franklin, Chicago, IL; Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, FL; and NOVA University, Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Collado’s work was pictured in the Artforum Critic’s Pick, accompanying the review of Fragment, a group exhibition at Emerson Dorsch. She had solo exhibitions with Dimensions Variable, Under the Bridge and Far Side Gallery in 2018. In 2019, an interview with her and Onajide Shabaka, mediated by Ryan N. Dennis, was published in BOMB Magazine. Her work is in the collections of Perez Art Museum Miami and El Museo del Barrio. Collado lives and works in North Miami, FL. • Large Mixed Media Unique Art Photo Louis Vuitton Tim White Sobieski Photograph
    Located in Surfside, FL
Tim White-Sobieski Alpha LV, 2005 Unique photo print on canvas 42 X 30 in Tim White Sobieski has been commissioned by LVMH multiple times, and in 2005, was invited to create an artwork for the new Louis Vuitton Flagship Store on Champs-Elysees in Paris alongside artists James Turrell and Olafur Eliasson. The project consisted of a 24-meter programmed fiber-optics video wall. Another colossal video wall was installed at the Petit Palais for the celebration of the launch. This was a unique cooperation of the three artists. In 2006, the Louis Vuitton Company invited Tim White-Sobieski back to participate in an exhibition entitled "Icons", an interpretation of the iconic logo-bags. Other artists included Marc Jacobs, Zaha Hadid, Ugo Rondinone, Sylvie Fleury, Shigeru Ban, Robert Wilson and Andrée Putman. From the 2006 ‘Icones’ exhibition at Espace Louis Vuitton, Paris. celebrating Marc Jacobs’ reinvention of their iconic pieces, works by Andree Putman, LV invited the architects Zaha Hadid and Shigeru Ban, the video artist Tim White-Sobieski, the director-scenographer Robert Wilson, and the artists James Turrell, Shigeru Ban, Sylvie Fleury, Bruno Peinado, and Ugo Rondinone to riff on their fashion logos Louis Vuitton's classic designs are an inextricable part of chic travel history. From trunks to leather bags to wine holders, their styles have traveled across time and fashion, becoming classics that never look old. With the genius of Marc Jacobs, these icons have entered new domains where art and fashion are directly linked. Tim White is a video and installation artist based in New York and Berlin. He was educated as an architect and dedicated himself to visual art and filmmaking, exploring the fields of painting, sculpture, photography, video, video installations and light installations throughout his career. He began showing in New York in the early 1990s with his "Blue Paintings." Emphasis on the role of the subconscious in his paintings had affinities with visual abstractionism and literary existentialism. He has consistently been at the technological forefront of video and light art, being called a "video maverick" and "an abstract "'painter of motion.'" Tim White-Sobieski was born in 1961 and emigrated to the United States in 1993. He attended New York University and Parsons School of Design before embarking on a career in art. Much of his work draws from literary work that has inspired the artist, and he has often featured icons of American literature in his installations. Writers such as Walt Whitman, John Steinbeck, John Updike, Kurt Vonnegut, J.D. Salinger, William Faulkner, and Robert Penn Warren all have a permanent presence in Tim White-Sobieski’s oeuvre. Musically, White-Sobieski composes most of his own film and video soundtracks, but also incorporates the work of his contemporaries such as Brian Eno, David Byrne, Robert Fripp...
