SALE ONE WEEK ONLY These wax relief portraits of two women, possibly the same woman dated two years apart, is a work that is exemplary of one of the 19th century's masters of the craft, Richard Cockle Lucas. Lucas was known for doing the wax relief portraits of both well-known figures in British society such as the Prime Minister Lord Palmerston and figures of the local churches near and in his local hometown of Chilworth, such as the Bishop of St David's, Thomas Burgess. Each wax profile measures approx. 6 inches tall x 3 inches wide carved in the color off white wax with the name of the sitter and dates on both signed into the brown wax back ground. One is signed Miss Crawford Walton 1851 and one is signed Miss Crawford 1853, both have the signature of Richard Cockle Lucas along side of the sitters name. Both are mounted into a frame by Chapman Bros. Carvers, Gilders and Frame Makers Picture Restorers. Due to the rarity of the item, we will not be individually selling the pieces. This is a complete set. Richard Cockle Lucas was born in 1800 in Salisbury, England. His artistry began at the age of twelve when he was apprenticed to be a cutler under his uncle, revealing that he had a talent for sculpting. He would go on to study at the Royal Academy School and would become a regular contributor to its architecture by the time he was 28. That same year his son Albert Dürer Lucas, an artist in his own right, was born. The Lucas family moved to Chilworth in 1854 where he would spend the rest of his life there, designing his own home the "Tower of the Winds" followed by "Chilworth Tower". A noted eccentric, Richard Cockle Lucas was known to believe in fairies and to ride around town in a Roman chariot. While most Richard Cockle Lucas was most known for his sculptures, he was also a noted photographer. He was also devoted to the Elgin Models, making his own wax models of the work where were exhibited in the British Museum. In 1845 he would publish his own book on the Elgin Marbles entitled "Remarks on the Parthenon". Lucas's etchings focused heavily on his own ideas, biblical stories, and 18th century poetry. To this day, many of his sculptures can be found in the squares of London. Lucas died in 1883. His busts, medallions, statuary, and other works have been exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution the Suffolk Street Gallery of the Society of British Artists, the National Portrait Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Gallery in Berlin, and Bodelwyddan Castle. Famous subjects of Lucas have included Samuel Johnson, Isaac Watts, Richard Colt Hoare, Sir Frederic Madden, Thomas Garnier, Anthony Panizzi, Henry Hallam, and Lady Stepney.
