About the Item

'Sapphire Sea Spruce' is an excellent example of the paintings of Daniel Klewer, coming from his series 'Linear Tactility.' The paintings in this series all share a consistent, linearly divided composition with investigations into the visual and psychological resonance of color relationships and texture. Color relationships, texture, and a brushless paint application dominate the paintings’ surface, while also questioning the figure-ground relationship: The sculptural paint feels as if it is reaching off the canvas towards the viewer like the spines of a cactus. At the same time, the vibrant colors draw the viewer back to the paintings’ surface. 48 x 48 x 2.50 inches signed in ink on reverse unframed Daniel was born and raised in Milwaukee and majored in art at UWGB. He also earned a Master of Arts in visual studies degree from Cardinal Stritch University. He is now based in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Klewer is best known for his painting process, which over the years has evolved into him nearly doing away with the brush and implementing a non-traditional paint application. Daniel’s love of oil and acrylic paint is evident in his treatment of his abstract paint surfaces. He enjoys a meditative, sequential process where the spontaneity of the material is allowed to influence the direction of the work. His oeuvre thus sits between the Hard-Edge abstraction of such artists as Agnes Martin, Ellsworth Kelly and Martin and Carmen Herrera, and the gestural and spontaneous techniques of the Abstract Expressionists.

She comfortably paints both miniature and large wall hangings using acrylics and water- based textile paints, she uses materials such as bark cloth, recycled paper made out of water hyacinth, Hessian, canvas and many other tradition materials. Her unique art pieces are inspired by ancient and contemporary African designs. They depict typical village scenes of life around Lake Victoria. 'Painting is the only way I can get back to my roots by using our cultural materials such as bark cloth that was used by our ancestors and helps me preserve my culture through some of the motifs I use that were used long ago as signs of belief and worship in the African culture.' Her distinctive artwork is well known in Uganda and throughout East Africa. Her bold, fluid lines explore complex subjects such as women empowerment and national development with economy and grace. Her central artistic preoccupation is the continuation of distinctively African culture. In 2007, she started her own label, Atal Stella. There she focuses on using what is locally available, including eco-friendly, natural and re-cycled material. Her designs have showcased at the Africa Fashion Week New York, in 2010 and at the Green Fashion...
