Donise English
Donise English is a Poughkeepsie-based artist who received her bachelor of science from Art History State University College at New Paltz in 1977 and MFA from Bard College in 1986 and is currently a Professor of Studio Art at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. English is interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. She uses gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define her pictorial space. For each piece, English creates a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure. English has received numerous awards including a 2018 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Painting; the Invitational Award for Outstanding Contemporary Talent from the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut; Purchase Prize from the “11th National Juried Exhibition” at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland; 1st Prize, “Women in the Visual Arts,” Erector Square Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut; the Joseph A. Cain Memorial Purchase Award for Sculpture, Del Mar College, Texas, Honorable Mention and others.

- Harmonies in Blues & Greens (Bold Contemporary Abstract Expressionist Painting)By Christopher EngelLocated in Hudson, NY30.5 x 24.5 inches oil on canvas sides of canvas are painted Wired to hang as a vertical painting Engel breathes new life into a refurbished older painting with this vertical abstract expressionist style painting titled Blue Arc. New layers are imposed on old, the remnants of the under layers remain, adding depth to fresh coats of paint. Gestural strokes of teal green, neon poppy pink, sunny yellow and royal blue create the color scheme as the artist elegantly weaves each bold color into a web that is at once saturated yet distinct. About the artist: Calm and confident brush strokes sweep over each painting by Christopher Engel. His work vibrates with the energy of bold, gestural lines that intersect at points between the foreground and background. These fields are bridged together in a web of kinetic, interconnecting lines which create a remarkable reach into the third dimension. The close examination of space, or how we create it and replenish a void, is a study that Engel has pursued since he started as a landscape painter in the early 70s. “I was deeply affected by the relationship between the elements of the landscape; trees, shrubs, bushes, and elements on the periphery,” he states, “everything worked to define the space that contained and moved me.” Engel currently works out of a studio near Roxbury, NY, where a pellet stove...Category

- Fan Painting #1 (Contemporary, Minimalist Abstract Painting in Ivory Palette)By Christopher EngelLocated in Hudson, NYAbstract painting on curved canvas in a minimal ivory white palette oil on canvas on unique artist made stretcher 36 x 74 inches This curved canvas was painted by abstract artist Christopher Engel in 2006. The abstract expressionist style painting contains a subdued blend of cool white and ivory tones, with faded blue and green accents along the top edge. A sturdy wire spanning the back of the painting provides for instant, professional-quality hanging. Artist Statement: The Fan Shaped Paintings evolved from the process of mixing paint in paper coffee cups. As I noticed the intriguing arrangement and patterns of color and shapes in the mixing cups I began to set the cups aside to save those images. Years later, I began unfolding the stacks of cups I had saved to see the images and patterns of color. I was also attracted to the fan-like shape of the opened cups. The spontaneous nature of the color and shapes on my palette of “coffee cups” became the genesis of the creation of the Fan Paintings.
