Du Ke is a Chinese male artist born in 1968 who lives and works in Tongzhou district, Beijing, China. He was graduated from the Painting Department of Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts in 1994. In 1995, he settled in Beijing Yuanmingyuan Artist Village to engage in artistic creation. In 1998, he entered the Oil Painting Research Office of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts to study. In 2000, he founded Du Ke Oil Painting Studio. Since 2007, he has been stationed in Songzhuang Artist Village. In 1994, he held his first solo exhibition with the theme “Sofa Series” at Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts Art Museum. In 1996, he held one oil painting exhibition with 10 other artists at the Beijing Yunfeng Art Garden. In 1997, he participated at the “Three People Walking” oil painting exhibition in Beijing International Art Garden. Several works were purchased by collectors from Taiwan and Hong Kong. In 2005, he held the Guangzhou Modern Art Salon Exhibition. In 2007, he participated in the “Life in Songzhuang” theme exhibition at Songzhuang Art Museum). In the same year, he participated in the “Songzhuang Art Market” Open Exhibition in Beijing Agricultural Exhibition Hall. In 2008, he participated in the "Welcome to the new Year" Hundred Artists Art Exhibition. Several of his works are collected by the Shangshang International Art Museum. He also participated in the theme exhibition of “Songzhuang Originality” in May. He participated in the “No Theme” painting exhibition in Beijing Hongwan Art Museum in October of the same year. Still in October, he finally participated to the “Contemporary Chinese Art Exhibition” at 798 Dafeng Gallery. In December 2009, the work “Youth Dance” series was sent to Poly Winter Auction. In 2010, he participated in the Nomination Exhibition of Chinese Young Artists in Shanghai. In the same year, he exhibited at the Beijing Huantie Times International Gallery and held a solo exhibition themed “Youth, Youth” where several of his works were collected. In 2010, he participated at the “Beijing Beijing” Art Exhibition at Songzhuang Xiaobao Station Gallery. Since 2012, he is represented by the Songzhuang Art Cooperative Gallery. From 2014 to 2016, he participated to the first and second rounds of the Chinese New Wild Artists Group Exhibition, with the “Big Sofa Series” and “Large Landscape Series” at the Beijing Rodin Museum of Art. In 2017, several of his works participated at Huachen Auction in Xiamen. In April 2018, he exhibited at Pure China curated by Hong Kong Spring International Art. In 2021, he participated in the Chinese Mammoth Contemporary Art Exhibition in Beijing and in December 2021, the “Childhood” series will participate at the Shanghai Hongda Art Auction. In 2022, the work “Big Sofa Series” participated in the “Chinese Contemporary Artists Exhibition hosted by the Young and Middle-aged Artists Network Platform and won the first prize.

In his luminescent multi-paneled oil paintings Freed tries to find the gray area between traditional landscape painting and its abstraction into color fields. Artist Statement For nearly twenty years, I made non-objective grid structured paintings. I started to see references to landscape in these works. I've literalized those references by painting oil landscape vistas of horizons, clouds and bodies of water. These paintings consist of two or more vertical panels. Usually one panel is landscape imagery. The adjacent panels are often atmospheric voids with vestiges of recognizable landscapes. I try to capture the mystical light found in natural atmospheric effects: the haze in the distance on humid summer days, the overcast gloom of winter skies, and the softness of landscape bathed in fog, and the quieting mood of approaching darkness. My intent is to create paintings imbued with a meditative, spiritual presence suggesting issues about time and ecology. I do this by softly modulating color, tone and value. The color varies from quiet, monochromatic works to fully orchestrated chromatic ones. By blending from one hue to another I create color which makes its self gradually felt, weeping forth. In this manner, I create illusions of mysterious emanations of light, places where ones eyes and spirit are invited to linger. I try to imbue my work with a monumental presence, epic in both size and scope. I do this by orchestrating the separate elements of color, texture and structure into a harmonious whole. I seek a somewhat reductive image rich in value and contrast. The surface of the work is devoid of textural incidence. I don’t want anything to distract from the illusion of depth so I deny any marks which would hold the viewer on the surface of the painting. In my luminescent multi- paneled oil paintings I try to find the grey area between traditional landscape painting and its abstraction into color fields. The compositions are about ambiguities of form and void, foreground and background and surface and deep space. My roots lie in tonalism, color field painting and minimalism. However, my work contains an ever-present awareness of the dramatic use of light of the post-renaissance chiaroscurists. It combines a classical awareness of structure with a romantic use of color always in combination with a unique sense of ambiguity. My work continues in its evolution of style the search for an abstract means of probing the ambiguities of physical and spiritual experience of light, and its power to foster a more intense life of the spirit through profound emotional experience of form, color and composition.
