Emilio Adan Martinez
Cuban Artist Emilio Martinez Untitled 1

About the Item

Emilio Adan Martinez was born in Cienfuegos, Cuba, in 1954. In 1961 at the age of six he immigrated to Miami with his family. He earned his BFA from Florida International University in 1995. As a child, Martinez was always making art– creating toys, sculptures and other pieces from the humblest of found objects. With the Cuban revolution came strife, separation and finally flight. Martinez, who has but few memories of that time, recalls very distinctly his grandfather preparing a bomb shelter adjacent to the family property in Las Villas. Images of trenches, tunnels, and caves – with the one spot of daylight coming from above – find expression in his work even today. Though originally known for his heavy sculptural pieces that pair the warmest of wood with the coldest of metal, Martinez is currently exploring other media including paper, string, paint and pine branches. These light, floating pieces bring to mind kites and boats and travel – from the earthbound to the unbound, from the ephemeral to the eternal. An installation of these pieces, titled “Andan Volando,” is currently on view at Miami International Airport, Concourse D, in Miami, Florida. Emilio Adan Martinez’s work can be found in public and private collections throughout the United States and Europe.

  • Modernist Dry Pigment Plaster Lacquer Abstract Geometric Painting Gregg Robinson
    By Gregg Robinson
    Located in Surfside, FL
Gregg Robinson, American (born 1948) Canvas mounted on wood board work of art depicts geometric shapes and forms with a lacquered high gloss finish. Hand signed lower left and dated 1995. Dimensions: 24 X 24 X 1.75 in. GREGG ROBINSON The universe of visual art encompasses a huge spectrum of motivation and means of expression. Examples range from the most syrupy sentimentality to extremes of moral and intellectual confrontation. For me, the creative process is, on the simplest level, an aesthetic puzzle. Elements of the puzzle include contrast, color, visual texture, graphic pattern, and in some recent work, a simple cryptic symbolism. I have never been particularly interested in lyric or pictorial content, and though some of my work does contain undeniable spatial illusion, even that tends to be a by-product rather than a goal of the primary pursuit: the balance of light and dark, pure color and organic neutrals, energy and calm, strong pattern and subtle field. Having grown up in an environment of contemporary architecture, I have always valued the classic modern synthesis of form and function exemplified by the Bauhaus movement of the early 20th century. Hence, the simplest solutions are often the most satisfying. Obviously, the modernist ideal of efficiency in form and function requires that method of execution be as well adapted to the aesthetic goal as the visual language itself. The media before you is the result of many years of experimentation that came to its current form in early 1992. I work with dry pigment over a plaster surface. My tools are broad knives, sponges, rags and masking. The finish is a high gloss alkyd resin. His prints have been published by GalleryOnline, publishers of Per Arnoldi, Ricardo benaim, Pierre Marie Brisson, Simon Bull, Fanch Ledan, Claude Gaveau and Laurent Schkolnyk and more. • Large Modernist Figurative Abstract Oil Painting BASKET
    By Marlene Bauer
    Located in Surfside, FL
A Pacific Northwest native, Bauer was born in Vancouver, Washington, and has maintained a studio in Portland, Oregon since 1976. She attended the Pacific Northwest College of Art and the University of Oregon where she received her M.F.A. Since that time, she has exhibited her work throughout the Northwest while teaching art as an associate professor at Marylhurst University. Bauer applies her modernist approach to her artwork, and her paintings become a sort of balancing act in reconciling her subjects and her techniques. Teetering between abstraction and representational, Bauer's houses are depicted as simplified forms, exploiting a universal iconography. The recognizable elements in her artwork – trees, buildings – are unconventionally depicted in wide patches of overlapping color, "pulling each painting away from literal interpretation." Marlene Bauer's abstractions stem from her interest in the visual dynamics of a quick impression of a landscape from a moving car or a glance out a window. The artist has exhibited her work in solo exhibitions at the Laura Russo Gallery, the Elizabeth Leach Gallery (both in Portland), and the Davidson Galleries in Seattle. Bauer's artwork is included in many of the region's public and private collections including the King County Regional Justice Center, Bank of America, the City of Portland, the City of Seattle, the Oregon State...
