Antidotes are substances or treatments that serve to neutralise or alleviate the damaging effects of poisons or diseases. They thus play a decisive role in medicine. The development of antidotes is based on a deep understanding of the mode of operation of the toxin or disease against which they are applied.
With this exhibition [Antidote, Galerie Reinthaler, Vienna 2024], Florian Nährer presents us with the eponymous beneficial remedy and obviously knows what we need: a peaceful, meditative position in the current turmoil of war, desperation and constant shocking news from around the world every day.
The origination process of his paintings should remain visible. Revealing the painting process is part of the painting. The traces of adhesive tape and the resulting relief texture of the paint lend his works body and rough edges. Nährer wants his paintings to open windows. Windows into another world. To this extent, his works have something timeless, classic about them. Transcendence and beauty have been the central themes of art since its beginnings. Joan Miró very much agreed: "In abstract painting, the artist does not create portrayals of the world, but instead opens windows to the divine dimension, where the infinite and the eternal live in every brush stroke.”
In contrast with the timelessness of his themes, Nährer’s colour palette is clearly of the here and now, individual and unmistakable. The term “dopamine colours” originated in fashion and art during and shortly after the pandemic. This refers to an aesthetic characterised by lively, powerful colours and evokes intense emotional reactions. The colours stimulate the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter in the brain that is linked with reward, pleasure and feelings of happiness. Nährer’s language of colour has a very similar effect.
