About the Item
In 1951, just returning from a Pepsi Scholarship in Rome, Mitchell moved to an area near the South Street Seaport in Lower Manhattan known as Coenties Slip. Surrounding Jeanette Park, overlooking the East River and the Brooklyn Bridge, Coenties Slip was a three-block pie slice of glorious light, water views, and low rent. Mitchell was the first to discover Coenties Slip, but other artists soon followed him, including Agnes Martin, Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Indiana, Lenore Tawney, Charles Hinman and Jack Youngerman. In Ellsworth Kelly's words: "Thank you, Fred, for discovering Coenties!" The Whitney Museum mounted an exhibition entitled "Nine Artists/Coenties Slip" in 1974.
Mitchell was an integral part of the Downtown scene and a member of the Club. His work appeared in the seminal Guggenheim Museum Show "Younger American Painters" in 1954. This was the first museum exhibition on the subject of abstract art and effectively launched Mitchell's career to a higher level. It also solidified the position of New York as the leading art center in the world and helped launch a golden age of American painting. Curator James Sweeney wrote: ". . . when one compares the work of the more venturesome painters of the younger generation in this country with that of younger Europeans of a similar age, there is an immediately apparent difference. What is it? And what may be the sources of it?"
Deep into the scene, Mitchell wasn't just influenced by what was going on around him, but an influencer himself. One critic wrote: "Mitchell proceeds to advance perhaps the most important aspect of the Abstract-Expressionist esthetic for which he has always had such sympathy, and which he himself played a part in defining." (emphasis ours)
We would be remiss if we did not mention Mitchell's role as a founder of the Tanager Gallery along-side Lois Dodds, and including others such as Alex Katz, Philip Pearlstein, Tom Wesselman, Mary Abbot and others. Tanager and others likely it were formed in response to the rigid hierarchies of the "Uptown" Galleries and an attempt to show younger, more venturesome artists. Many of these artists would go on to become among greatest American artists of the past half century. Mitchell also exhibited at Tanager.
Mitchell had numerous solo and group museum and gallery shows, and his work can be found in numerous museum collections.

- UntitledBy Melville PriceLocated in Lawrence, NYFrom the estate of the artist. The history of the New York School painters is still being written, but Price earned a well-deserved place from the beginning. Price was one of the youngest of the first generation Abstract Expressionist circle of painters working in New York after WWII. Though only in his late twenties he began exhibiting in 1948 in New York at Hugo, Bodely, Iolas and Egan galleries. In a 1949, showing at Peridot galleries, Price was hailed for his breakthrough "Maze Series." A complex interweaving of organic shapes, automatic in nature and sometimes resembling bones or body parts, the "Maze" paintings exuded a pulsating energy that brought him critical acclaim. He received rave reviews in Art Digest, the New York Times and the New York Tribune. Price's earliest work was biomorphic or surrealist in nature, influenced by the automatism of Andre Breton and his school. By 1946, his work began to move away from this style to an all-over, decentralized style which became the "Maze" works and ultimately AbEx works which saw their culmination in the "Black Warrior" series. When the "Club" was started, Price was invited to join and forged close relationships with other members of the New York School including Fritz Bultman, Giorgio Cavallon, Weldon Kees, Bradley Walker Tomlin...Category

- UntitledBy Marcel JancoLocated in Lawrence, NYWe are pleased to present this vivid, modernist work by Marcel Janco, one of the founders of Dada. It is housed in a stunning House of Heydenryk frame. Marcel Janco was a Romanian-Israeli-Jewish painter who was one of the founders of Dadaism and a noted modernist architect. His career evinced the modern artist's interest in the primitive in art. In its earliest years, the Romanian avant-garde flourished mainly outside of Romania, thanks to the conservative and nationalistic mood of that country during the post-World War I era. Dada, the anti-art movement, was hatched by a group of Romanian expatriate artists, Tristan Tzara (born Sami Rosenstein), Marcel Janco and other intellectuals working in Zurich in 1915. The Dada movement, which later took root in other centers in Europe and the United States, fostered an abandonment of traditional artistic methods and forms and urged an approach to art without preconceived ideas. A manifesto by Tristan Tzara said that Dada meant nothing, that ''we want works, straightforward, strong, accurate and forever not understood, logic is always wrong.'' Janco built the scenery for Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich that was the first Dadaist meeting place, and he was one of the most energetic members of the Zurich group. At the cabaret the members of the group put on shows and performances that were alien to and completely different from anything to which the bourgeois society of Zurich was accustomed. Marcel Janco was a full partner in all the group's activities - he created the masks they wore during stage performances, and took part in the shows that evoked great rage and indignant responses from the audience. A Dada construction of his was reproduced on the cover of Dada, the group's magazine, published in 1917. His best known Dadaist works were abstract, architectonic plaster reliefs, one of which is in the collection of the MOMA. Janco had his first exhibition at Cafe Voltaire in 1916. In 1917, Janco exhibited at the first Dada show in Zurich at the Dada gallery together with Hans Arp, Giorgio de Chirico, Paul Klee, and Tzara. In 1918, he became a member of Das Neue Leben, a group of artists in Basel that included Arp, Fritz Baumann, Augusto Giacometti...Category

- Tavern, Abstract (1960)By Chuck CloseLocated in Saint Augustine, FLArtist: Chuck Close Title: Tavern Year of Work: 1960 Medium: Oil on Canvas Signature: Signed & Dated Upper Left Dimensions: framed 31 x 25 unframed 30 x 24 Provenance: Chuck Close, Marjorie Dalton (Dear friend of Chuck), Private Collection. Tavern, is truly a rare find, an original oil on canvas, in compelling blues and grays with a touch of gold and orange. This work reveals more imagery and detail the longer one enjoys it. This painting was created during his years studying in Yale Art School, and draws different qualities to each new viewer similar to a Rorschach. Close's work is in the collections of most of the great international museums of contemporary art, including the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York City. and the Tate Modern in London. Artist Bio: Chuck Close – (1940-2021) an American painter, artist and photographer born in Monroe, Washington. Early childhood illnesses including a neuromuscular condition, nephritis and dyslexia were compounded later in life by a condition known as prosopagnosia (face blindness), which may have inspired him to do portraits. Most of his early, large-format portraits are based on photographs, using photorealism or hyperrealism, of family and friends, often other artists. Close often painted abstract portraits of himself and others, which hang in collections internationally. Even though a catastrophic spinal artery collapse in 1988 left him severely paralyzed, he continued to paint inspired by artists like Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. Close's first solo exhibition, held in 1967 at the University of Massachusetts Art Gallery, Amherst, featured paintings, painted reliefs, and drawings based on photographs of record covers. Being much in the mainstream of pop art, a fragment of Close's portrait of singer-songwriter Paul Simon...Category
