About the Item
The large abstract painting "LIVING CORAL" by Jeffrey Kurland, with acrylic paint on canvas measuring 84" high by 84" wide, is new work from the spring of 2019. Often employing paints and pigments from surprising sources (automotive manufacturers, industrial finishers), the various green and orange colors appear in an calming structure.
Jeffrey has developed his own methods and techniques to achieve this structure. He doesn't use brushes, but pours and directs the paint using a variety of methods. Kurland embraces spontaneity and intuition – there are no preparatory sketches. In this manner he pursues as much as captures the painting.
Innovating technically, building structure on the canvas and pushing color abstraction forward on his own terms – bending, breaking, flowing and channeling color. Broad gesture and active, tactile surfaces emerge from the canvas through his experimental process and approach to materials, application and composition.
Jeffrey Kurland received his BFA in Painting and Printmaking from the University of Michigan, and an MFA in Painting from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan. He’s been living and working in New York City since 1976, developing his art practice which includes painting, drawing, collage, monoprints, and book arts.
