About the Item
Arid incorporates elements of the landscape, texture and mixed materials to create a desert like scene open to interpretation. Created in 2022, this painting is part of the ongoing series of landscape paintings that shows a circle, sun or moon as the pieces focal point. Exploring ideas of heliocentric philosophies, our place in the universe and questions of our existence come in to play throughout these paintings. As much of a landscape painting as it is an abstract painting, Higgins uses found material in the studio to attach to the surface creating rich textures and material variations. Incorporating these materials also supports the artists ongoing themes of sustainability and recycling into his work and how these topics relate to the landscape.

Matt Higgins is an artist and art professor who lives and works in Philadelphia, Pa. He received his MFA from The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and BFA from West Chester University. His work is included in numerous private and public collections throughout the United States, Europe and Australia. His various bodies of work focus on themes of abstraction, the landscape and text based paintings. His work can be viewed as a constant progression, as well as a cycle from one body of work to the next. He often times returns to existing themes or motifs with a fresh outlook after departing for periods of time. Growth and learning is a significant part of the artists practice and this continued openness and exploration is what keeps his work fresh and original from one body of work to the next, never settling for predictability or the mundane.

- Interference, Contemporary Abstract Oil PaintingLocated in Philadelphia, PAIn this piece, the intense use of negative space highlights each individual marks character, weight and texture. The painting explores various types of mark making and paint application inspired by elements of the landscape painted in various thicknesses, intensities and with a variety of different tools. Each mark is calculated and responsive to the one that came before it, creating a cause and effect relationship across the surface of the canvas. Restraint is a key element of this new body of work from artist Matt Higgins and the option to go further is always there. However, the excitement and spontaneity of the piece would therefore be sacrificed. Done in one session of intense meditative focus, A Place We Can See depends upon the exact moment of creation...Category
