Melissa Shaak’s “Archipelago” is a 40 x 26 x 2 inch abstract acrylic painting, with charcoal, on top quality Arches paper mounted on cradled board. At first glance the flat taupe color dominates, but as the eye moves, the flora and fauna of the “islands” take shape. Flashes of warm, saturated color—yellow, orange, pink, red—are joined by scraggly, blue-green patches. This painting is an exploration of how the act of concealing, by means of overpainting large swaths, reveals and brings focus to the sprawl of life in the layers underneath.
