About the Item
Parris Jaru's The Great Emancipation is a 48 x 36 inches oil painting. The main colors are yellow and brown. The surface is defined by a thick impasto of paint, made with plant-based pigments that Jaru collects himself during his long exploratory trips through India. This painting is part of a new series that concentrates on using natural colors only, extracted from plants. Natural Indigo, Turmeric, Hibiscus, Beet Root, Rosemary Leaf, Aloe Extract, and Holi Powders to name a few, mixed with Babul Tree Resin. Though the overall composition is abstract, there is a perception of figuration.
New York–born artist Parris Jaru comes from a Jamaican, Blackfoot Nation, and Arawak Nation background. His work is informed by the vivid colors and imagery experienced during his childhood years spent in the coastal town of Saint Ann’s Bay, Jamaica. Exploratory journeys in India enriched his practice, inspiring him to use natural, plant-based pigments including sea algae, hibiscus, gymnema silvestre, and turmeric, which he grinds with oils for his paintings. In his studio, Jaru brings all these cultural inspirations together. His work deploys an intentionally childlike, faux naïf style, constantly shifting between figurative and abstraction. Totemic figures with the aura of archaic earth gods, like in Angel on My Shoulder and A Link to the World, shift into abstractions of sensual impastos made of light and color, like in Before the People or Beachside Accomodations. The titles of the paintings, are a reminder of the delicate balance between a tangible and non-tangible world depicted by Jaru as well as his playful approach, leaving the viewer suspended in a dreamy perception.
The artist states "Throughout my life, I have always been dedicated to art but painting has added patience of perception and love to my conscience mind, as well cultivating my unconscious. Painting gives me confidence and inner security that has been hard for me to attain elsewhere. When I say a piece has turned out really well, a certain balance has been achieved between composition, perspective, color, and depth giving my creative side a jolt. Although my works change frequently in form depending on mood and inspiration, the one thing that remains the same in all my works is an abstract touch. I am drawn mostly to abstract expression for the free-flowing aspect of creation.
My favorite material is Plant-Pigment-Powder (ex; Sea Algae, Hibiscus, Gymnema Sylvestre, and Turmeric powder. Mixing these pigments reminds me that nature is the purest example of artistic perfection and composition open to interpretation for all. With this understanding, I am able to open communications with the energies of nature. the main purpose of these herbs is for medicinal healing, when I add them to my medium it adds an ethereal quality to my works. When I select my materials, I am very specific with my choices, after trial and error, I work exclusively with denser herbs giving me the texture I desire and is compatible with oil paints and acrylics, adding depth and longevity to the works. Although I am drawn to blues, reds, and blacks for the body, my favorite colors are the highlights, whites, yellows, and light grey. I know a piece is done when it feels right, with clarity, movement, and composition also complementing my sense of imagination. When my work is going well, I am filled with a sense of wonder and creative joy open to all possibilities of creation. When people see my painting’s I like them to share a part of my thoughts and inspiration, looking at the artist and his works from the inside. I reach my end goal when the painting has connected another link in the chain of an individual’s emotions."

- Shaped by the Elements - Poetry Painting with Poem by the ArtistBy Parris JaruLocated in New York, NYParris Jaru's Shaped by the Elements is a 60 x 39 inches oil painting representing a poem laid on a green background. The modulated green shades frame the poem placed in the center. The surface is defined by a thick impasto of paint, made with plant based pigments that Jaru collects himself during his long exploratory trips through India. The surface is scraped and incised with words and signs, almost like graffiti on a wall or inscriptions on an archaeological fragment. The poem is written on top of a different colored impasto that creates the illusion as if it was written on ancient pergamena. Like for the ancient Chinese painter Wu Zhen, the composition focus on the dynamic balance of the elements. The poem, written by the artist, reads “On fire tho’ not in desire Kept wet from training for this occasion If to wonder let’s say by the rains in summer, I’m covered Can’t stand the fragility of castles created from sand and so should be able to defend against them, somehow So to say fragile is the law of this land, this man Babylon burns Such rhetoric from the emancipated, educated tho’ vegetated, shouting in the alley’s of folly is their anthem, forgetting to freedom fighters as replacements for them The earth burns by lightning to replenish the finished, replaced by quick wit and vegan breakfast Continue to insinuate as the fire burns Continue to read the menu; the entrée holds a new batch of manure, to adore Continue till the fire burns me brown...Category
