Paul Heald
Subtle Abstract Oil on Canvas by Listed American Artist Paul Heald (1936-2014)

1983

About the Item

Abstract painter Paul Heald was born in Michigan in 1936. He moved to the West Coast and died in Washington in 2014. His body of work focuses on line and form abstract painting, usually in subtle colors as opposed to bold colors preferred by others of his period. This work is a fine example of Heald’s pattern painting style. Using subtle colors - pink, blue and taupe against the white primed canvas background, Heald uses repeat patterns that merge perspectively next to one another within the field. There is an ethereal aspect to this work that makes it fairly unique. It’s as if Jackson Pollack had a soft day and focused on geometric patterning rather than full on abstract expressionism. Heald does enhance his work with an overall drip pattern that is even more subtle than the underlaying patterns themselves. All is to great effect in creating a Post Modern work that bows to Abstract Expressionism. The work is likely acrylic on canvas, rather than oil. It measures 18” x 24” and is softly signed lower right and dated 1983. It is housed in a well made brushed-chrome shadow box frame that successfully floats the canvas. Overall framed dimensions are around 19” x 25”. Both the work and frame are in very good condition with no condition issues to report. It could be hung either horizontally or vertically, in my opinion, although I believe Heald meant it as a horizontal, given the location of the signature.

Large abstract acrylic painting on canvas by Amanda Andersen; one in a series of four created in 2020 during anxiety filled times due mostly to Covid. The shapes in these works represented a balloon at first–a common subject in the artist's earlier work, which honored the beauty and elegance of hot air balloons and also celebrated their invitation for a romantic escape. We all wanted an escape in 2020. The large shape can also be seen as a window; the static hole we all peered out from to check if the world was still out there. With stripes–also a common visual element in the artist's work, it may even suggest prison bars...
