'Eggs' still life - grocery store - supermarket - food painting - Pop Art

About the Item

This painting features vibrant hues of blue, green, pink, yellow, and red. Robert Hightower is inspired by the work of Giotto, Hieronymus Bosch, Jean-François Millet, Roger Brown, Howard Arkley and Julian Opie. Atlanta native, Robert Hightower’s latest body of work “Public Food,” is a quasi-narrative body of work that begins in medias res (Latin term meaning ‘into the middle of things,’) prodding at the future and stability of the industrialized world’s food markets and supply chains that we completely rely on for sustenance. The painting’s compositions are compressed & flattened, having no focal point. Together they emote an overwhelming, over-stimulated, and disorienting experience of grocery shopping, which, for Robert, brings to light many questions: “Where does all of this food come from?” Robert asks. “Who are the people working the land and who are the people reaping the benefits? What is industrial farming and what are feedlots? What are growth hormones, GMOs and Roundup and what are their lasting effects on consumers and the land? What does ‘organic’ mean? The branding, stickers, plastic wrap and marketing tell a story…but for what purpose and is it necessary?” “How does all of this food get shipped and distributed from its origin to the market shelf? We’ve all experienced recent supply chain disruptions and impacts, what happens if the supply chains completely break long term?” Robert’s paintings ask if this system as a whole is sustainable? Can we safely provide food for the eight billion people alive today and into the future? Robert received a BFA in sculpture from the University of Georgia. Upon graduation, he moved to New York City and participated in The Bronx Museum of the Art’s AIM Fellowship (Artist In the Marketplace). He currently lives and works in Atlanta.

  • Castilleja cruenta standl
    By Penelope Gottlieb
    Located in Palm Desert, CA
A painting by Penelope Gottlieb. "Castilleja cruenta standl" is a contemporary painting, ink, acrylic and oil on canvas panel in a variety of bright, bold colors by American artist Penelope Gottlieb. After receiving her BFA from the Art Center College for Design in Pasadena, Penelope Gottlieb went on to earn her MFA from the University of California in Santa Barbara where she currently lives and works. Gottlieb’s artistic repertoire is thoroughly modern and includes innovative paintings as well as compelling media design, for which she received an Emmy in the field of motion picture title design in 1993. Gottlieb’s more recent works showcase a unique synthesis of her modern graphic design background and the vintage botanical renderings of natural scientists. However, her paintings are also unique in their perspective on the traditional floral still life. Stylized flora and fauna are depicted as emanating from a comic book explosion, illustrating what the artist refers to as “the dire state of the planet” as faced with species extinction and the resulting biological and ecological ramifications. These violent representations of the artistically typified placid natural world are intended as “visual eulogies for lost plant life.” The particular specimens that Gottlieb depicts are in fact extinct and she is able to recreate them only from historical drawings and botanist’s descriptions. Although avant-garde and aesthetically unique, Gottlieb’s paintings delineate clear influences from the renowned artists of Pop and Expressionist art. The composition of many of her paintings is reminiscent of Kandinsky’s canvas-filling outpours while her bold color palette and black outlines recall Lichtenstein’s comic book panels. Her work is also closely related to a more contemporary group of artists, including Alexis Rockman...
