1960 abstract oil painting by British artist Robert Sadler, in greys

1960

About the Item

A striking abstract landscape painting by ex RAF pilot / artist Robert Sadler The details of the painting are as follows: Robert Sadler (British, 1909 – 2001) Abstract, circa 1960 Oil on board 30.1/2 x 12.7/8 in. (87.5 x 32.5 cm.) Signed ‘SADLER’ (lower right) Robert Sadler was born 1909 in Newmarket, Suffolk as the second son of a racehorse trainer. Learning to draw and paint as a child, he exhibited great promise. Dedication to his artistic career wouldn’t start, however, until retirement from his illustrious career in the RAF in 1955. Sadler had drawn and painted throughout his military service, but it is upon retirement that he attributed to “devote the rest of my life to painting”. Initially living in his hometown of Newmarket to be close to his elderly mother, he created most of his large and more exciting abstract expressionist works during this period. He moved on in 1964 to Aldeburgh, Suffolk where he built his studio and began painting mainly smaller landscapes (as if seen from a low flying aircraft), still lifes, figures and sometimes horses, but often turned to the abstract expressionism for which he is best known. He consistently held solo studio exhibitions every year here as part of the Aldeburgh Festival between 1965 and the year of his death in 2001. He exhibited internationally in the most esteemed galleries over the course of his artistic life and his work is held across numerous collections.

  • "Untitled Abstract" Oil on Board, Abstract Expressionist, Signed by the Artist
    Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY The energy and gusto of the applied paint in "Untitled Abstract" appears close to violent except for the calming influence of the circle in the middle. The red circle tempers the movement a little and brings all the strokes and wild directions into a harmony that is bursting with life. This is an extraordinarily expressive painting by Simpson. Simpson became the first African American to receive a prestigious five-year fellowship from the Charleston Scientific and Cultural Education fund and left South Carolina in 1949 for New York City after he finished high school. He attended New York University and Cooper Union while working in the frame shop of Herbert Benevy. Many well-known artists came to the frame shop and in time critiqued Simpson's work and developed a relationship with him. At NYU Simpson became acquainted with Hale Woodruff...
