About the Item
"Early Spring" by Alexandra Rozenman is a small mysterious 12 x 12 x 3 inch oil painting on wood panel, a dreamscape in sky blue, grass green and midnight black. You can smell the fresh grass, hear the birds chirping in the distance and see the depth of meaning in the eyes of a sad but funny creature lying on a striped mattress in front of you all at once; facing you and asking questions about life and death, beginning and end. You see a little girl with uncontrolled curly hair growing out of the grass field as a flower or hiding deep into the earth searching for the truth. From the title, we know that it may be too early to decide. This is just a beginning. This painting is mounted in a black metal float frame, is initialed on the front and signed, titled and dated on the reverse.
Alexandra Rozenman immigrated to America from the Soviet Union in 1989. Russian, European and American myths of national destiny and private identity take on a utopian dimension as she absorbs and expresses the psychology of otherness as fundamental aspects of her own identity. She wants her art to be like a well-worn military wool blanket that gives you warmth, love, and history. The artist states, "Whatever degree of abstraction defines my thinking and visual self-identification it has all to do with the search for my own image in a great existential sea of sweeping changes." Rozenman is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.
