Until now, the name Hendrik Jan Scholl was only known from a number of signed works of art, and from an entry in the archives of Castle Enghuizen (Hummelo) in connection with drawing lessons he taught. The appearance of an unknown drawing by his hand prompted extensive (archival) research, which yielded a wealth of new biographical information. Hendrik Jan Scholl also appears to have been an active member of the Zutphen magistrate. The curious combination of this with his artistry, commissioned by the regent patriciate to which he actually belonged, is typical of a Dutch provincial town of the eighteenth century, where social and professional dividing lines were less sharp than in the west of the Netherlands. the country. The article aims to provide a basis for further research. H.J. Scholl's work will probably appear in more archives than has been discovered so far.
