Willy Martens
Portrait of a Dutch Girl with Goat - Laren School 19thC pastoral oil painting

Circa 1890

About the Item

This beautiful 19th century Dutch oil painting is by noted artist Willem or more often Willy Martens. Painted circa 1890 it is very much in the style of the Laren School. The Laren School is the name of an art colony located in the Dutch village, Laren, in the Gooi near Hilversum. The artists of this offshoot of the Hague School chose the inhabitants of Laren and the surrounding landscape as the subject of their art. (similar to the Newlyn School in Cornwall and one can see similarities). Martens was very involved in the Pulchri Studio, an artist's society in the Hague with close ties to the artists in Laren. Martens certainly loved to paint peasants in the landscape, often with goats. Our painting is a particularly fine example of Martens work as a close up view. The composition is a young girl in pretty traditional clothing standing in the foreground before a thatched barn. She has a beautiful white and black goat and a couple of chickens are scratching around. Behind them is a gate and landscape beyond. The dappled sunlight is beautifully illuminating the goat and its shaggy coat. The detail, brushwork and palette are all superb. This is a very fine example of Martens work and of Dutch 19th century painting. Signed lower right. Provenance. Sheffield, The Horner Galleries, December 1950, 45gns. Condition. Oil on canvas, 26 inches by 20 inches unframed, in good condition. Frame. Housed in a gilt frame 34 inches by 27 inches framed and in good condition. The Dutch painter Willy Martens (1856-1927) was educated at the Amsterdam National Academy under August Allebe and B. Wijnveld and later worked there as well as with Bonnat in Paris. He received the legion de Honneur in 1889. Marens exhibited in Paris securing an honourable mention in 1886 and exhibiting again in 1900 when he was a non competing entrant and served on the jury. He was later Director of H W Mesdag National Museum until 1924. Martens was a painter of genre, portraits, landscapes and paintings of peasants both in interiors and outdoors in the landscape with animals. He very much painted in the style of the Larens School - the name of an art colony located in the Dutch village, Laren, in the Gooi near Hilversum. The artists of this offshoot of the Hague School chose the inhabitants of Laren and the surrounding landscape as the subject of their art. Around 1870, the painter, Jozef Israëls, discovered the village of Laren. He visited often with his son, Isaac, whom he instructed in outdoor painting. His enthusiasm for Laren, and the surrounding landscape and agricultural activity, was infectious, and other artists from the Pulchri Studio began to join him. Martens was a member and chairman of the Pulchri Studio, a Hague based artist's society. He was also a member of Arti et Amicitae in Amsterdam. He died in the Hague in 1927.

  • Race Horse Phoenix with Guilermo Kemmis - British 19th century art oil painting
    Located in London, GB
This superb British 19th century equine oil painting is by noted horse lover, George Gascoyne. Painted in 1889, this French born chestnut horse is Phoenix. While he was essentially a miler, Phoenix (sometimes seen spelled as “Phenix”) came from a family that had produced Classic winners in France at up to 15 furlongs. He proved an excellent sire following his export to Argentina, becoming the foundation stallion for Guillermo Kemmis' breeding program at Haras Las Rosas. This painting is from his time in Argentina with Kemmis. Phoenix is depicted in a flat landscape against a vivid blue sky. A gentleman, possibly his owner, Guillermo Kemmis, stands smiling in front of him holding his reigns and gives perspective to how tall Phoenix is. Although in profile, Phoenix is turning to look at the viewer, his chestnut coat gleaming and his anatomy perfectly portrayed. This is a superb Victorian equine portrait of a noted horse in the 19th century and is a lovely example of Gascoyne's work as a horse lover. Signed with initials and dated GG 1889 lower right. Provenance. Inscribed "Phenix" (Cymbal -- Belle-Etoile) by George Gascoyne, Sittingbourne, Kent to reverse. Condition. Oil on canvas, 36 inches by 28 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a wooden frame, 44 inches by 36 inches and in good condition. HORSE BIOGRAPHY Phoenix (FR) 1875 – 1893? Chestnut horse. Cymbal (GB) x Belle Etoile (FR), by First Born (FR) Family 25.
