About the Item

Count Albert de BELLEROCHE 1864–1944 Painter of portraits and genre, and lithographer; influenced by Impressionism. Born 22 October 1864 in Swansea, of Huguenot descent. Brought up by his stepfather, Harry Vane Millbank. Studied under Carolus-Duran in Paris and shared a studio with Sargent in Paris and London. He worked in France until 1911 when he married and settled in England, living first in Hampstead and after 1918 at Rustington, Sussex. Exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1887; member of the N.E.A.C. 1894–9 and a foundation member of the Salon d'Automne 1903; one-man shows of lithographs at Vienna 1902, the Goupil Gallery 1903, etc. In 1940 he moved to Southwell, Nottinghamshire, and died there on 14 July 1944. Retrospective exhibitions at the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff, 1942, the Salon d'Automne 1947, the Leicester Galleries 1954 (drawings), and Arthur Tooth & Sons 1955 (paintings). This painting came from the Bonhams sale in Knightbridge circa 2010 which included many examples of the artist's work that came directly from the Belleroche family.
