About the Item

Untitled is a work by contemporary Anton Kushaev from the series `Delirium`. In this series, the artist turns to a canonical motif — still life with a flower, the transformation of which he captured in a hallucinatory and dreamlike scenography. Incorporating allusions to post-war modernism, neo-Gothic aesthetics and the principles of Kreyotian theater, the artist seeks to approximate the experience of living in borderline states. - Anton Kushaev, born in. 1983, graduated from an icon painting school, but his main inspiration has always been the visual style of metaphysical paintings and surrealism, what can be seen in paintings (e.g., frequent reference to Dali's crutches). In his artistic practice Anton continuously revises the symbolic systems of the art history, always questioning: "What is an image? How it is related to the inconceivable and where are the boundaries of the language as a structure of knowledge?" His recent solo exhibitions include: 2022 - "Frame of sorrows" / Voskhod Gallery / Basel 2020 - "Barren flower" / Szena gallery / Moscow.
2018 - "You, only after" / Szena gallery / Moscow.
 2017 - "Without support" / Elektrozavod gallery / Moscow.
 2017 - "Unfit place" / space "Red" / Moscow.
2017 - "Questionable basis" / project START Winzavod / Moscow.

  • This Dream Again, Part 2 by Misha Gudwin - Color pencils on paper, 2023
    Located in Basel, BS
"This Dream Again" is a series created by contemporary artist Misha Gudwin for the group exhibition "Floral & Machine" at St. Paulus Church in Basel in 2023. The drawing conveys a fantasy-like, surrealistic reality, similar to a dreamlike experience. The images are exaggeratedly cute on the one hand and eerie on the other. It is as if we are peering into this otherworld through a shaped canvas frame, memorizing, with its shape, a map of the starry sky or binoculars. The plot and characters refer to various creepy content from the web, somebody like animatronics - mechanical growth dolls or Furby toys. In conveying an absurdist world in this series, the artist was inspired by the visual internet subculture of Wiredcor. Creating such a magical world is an escapist attempt to escape from aggressive reality, an attempt to escape from it into a dreamlike world. - Misha Gudwin is a contemporary artist, born in 1995. His artistic practice is focused on studying the inextricable relationship between material and virtual (digital) objects. He explores the interactions of street and digital environment using found object, reflecting the industrial image of post-Soviet cities. The artist says: "I propose to document our modernity, where the digital is no longer something new, and the human environment has long been combining signs of both material and digital space." Misha's recent solo exhibitions include: 2022 - "Liminal" / Voskhod gallery / Basel 2022 - "The night of Capricorn" / Vyksa Artist-in-Residence / Vyksa 2021 - "Lilac Light...

  • Monumental Surrealist Pastel, Of Course We Evolve But Does Anything Ever Change?
    Located in Cotignac, FR
Surrealist, figurative large scale pastel of a deconstructed head and other elements by Gordon Muir. With original exhibition title label. Presented in fine silvered wood and fabric custom frame, under glass. A magnificent and truly monumental work of a 'deconstructed' head and three other triptych elements. Influenced by the paintings of Francis Bacon and Salvador Dali the work is intriguing and arresting at the same time. We can see how Muir gained such success later for his sculptural pieces as he is even in this work thinking in three dimensions. On closer inspection the details reveal themselves, the eyeball reminiscent of the shell of a horse chestnut, the furry surface to the tongue all in soft pastel shades. The three upper elements, in monochrome revealing the development of man. A really intriguing and strong painting that would grace any interior and be the talking point of any collection. It is very unusual to find a pastel of these proportions. The medium itself gives the work a softness creating an intriguing juxtaposition to the subject itself. Sculptor, born in Hawick, Gordon Muir was educated at art colleges in London, Scotland and the University of New Mexico, after which he spent time working with woodblock artists in Japan. He has more recently concentrated his artistic endeavours on sculpture, much of this in collaboration with the Paul Hogarth...

  • Surrealist Gouache, 'Kerouac, Orlovsky and Burroughs, The Beat Generation'
    Located in Cotignac, FR
A late 20th century watercolour and gouache on paper by British artist Derek Carruthers. Signed to the bottom right. Carruthers at one period in his painting became quite interested in the classical period of Greek and Roman architecture. He liked to juxtapose modern and classical images to show that although thousands of years may pass we remain the same with the same habits, hopes and desires. Here the artist is sending a postcard back in time. Classical nudes lay on rocks to the bottom of the image whilst people in the postcard are also similarly lying in the sun. The contrast that hits the viewer is the beauty of the sculptures compared to the figures on the beach. Have we lost something over the thousands of years for all our advancement and technology? The postcard is annotated 'Jack Kerouac 35, William Burroughs 43, Tangier beach March-April... Ginsberg.' In fact the postcard depicted in this painting is a painted version of a photograph taken on Tanger beach in 1957. Jack Kerouac is centre with Peter Orlovsky to his left and Burroughs lying on the sand watching to the right. At that time Jack Kerouac was helping Burroughs type up his novel 'Naked Lunch'. The photo was taken by Allen Ginsberg. These three people were authors and founder members of the Beat...
