The Last Judgment mid-nineteenth century

1850s

About the Item

Oil on Canvas. The 'work is probably the preparatory and presentation painting to the commission, of the fresco created by Moretti Larese for the vault of the church of Volpago del Montello (Treviso), dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene. The Last Judgment depicts above Paradise on the clouds, gathered around Christ seated on the judge's throne. The Trinitarian image is composed in the background, with God the Father in flight and the dove of the Holy Spirit, among the choirs of angels and the elders of Revelation. Christ the judge is flanked by his mother Mary, in the role of intercessor, and by the four evangelists who have in their hands the Gospels they authored and at their side the traditional symbols. On either side are arrayed the Old Testament saints (David with the zither, Moses with the tablets of the law, John the Baptist with the barbed cross) and the apostles Peter (with the keys) and Paul (with the sword of martyrdom). The esplanade below is occupied by the other apostles (Andrew with the cross) and saints. The three Virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity, with their symbols, show the resurrected the cross of Jesus' sacrifice. The angel with the tuba awakens the dead and points them to the judge. Archangel Michael, with his flaming sword and double-pan scales, decides the individual fate of the resurrected. Below, the elect (including mothers with their babies) ascend to Heaven with the help of angels. Instead, the damned end up in the flames of Hell. The painting has obvious traces of the underlying pencil drawing and, compared to the final fresco, some minor differences in the postures of some figures and especially in the non-final colors. Moretti Largese became especially appreciated as a decorator of public and private palaces, but he also created some religious frescoes. The painting is presented in a late 19th-century frame.

  • David and Abigail, fourth decade of the 17th century
    Located in Milan, IT
The painting, done in oil on canvas, depicts the meeting between King David and Abigail, as narrated in the biblical text from the First Book of Samuel (I Samuel 25:1-34). David, left without food in the wilderness with his army, seeks relief from the wealthy Nabal, who contemptuously denies him any help, ungrateful of the benevolence he previously received from the king. Upon hearing the rejection, the ruler intends to take revenge by killing his entire lineage. Abigail, Nabal's beautiful and wise wife, decides to right the wrong and bring David plenty of food and gifts. In the king's presence the woman humbles herself, winning his forgiveness and benevolence. Soon afterwards widowed, she will in fact become his bride. The broad scene depicts the climax of the Old Testament episode, the moment when the woman prostrates herself before David and his servants prepare to deliver the gifts. The biblical event is here a pretext, as is customary in modern-age painting, for staging the colorful description of a sumptuous procession, which can be divided into two parts, almost two wings of a crowd divided specularly: on the left David with his dignitaries and the army; on the other, Abigail's retinue, handmaids, servants leading dromedaries and donkeys laden with food. The crowded group of figures is set in a natural proscenium: above a low horizon, barely hinted at by distant blue mountains, rises on the left side a craggy rocky cliff, the shelter of the army led by the ruler. The 'somatic intonation of the characters, as well as the choice of metallic chromatics and the play of light on the shiny fabrics refer to a clear Flemish matrix, particularly the influence of the frothy and sumptuous painting of Rubens and Van Dyck. As well set forth in the expert report prepared by Professor Giuseppe Sava, the work is to be attributed to Vincent Malò...
