Goyo Dominguez
Landscapes Finder (Buscador de paisajes) Figurative painting. Old masters style

1994

About the Item

Landscape Finder. Goyo painted this intriguing painting in 1994, when his inspiration from the old masters was most noticeable. The artist declares: “I feel a powerful attraction to the works of the early masters of the Quattrocento. I think its beauty is the result of the tension between an intuitive desire for plastic order and the clumsiness of resources typical of someone who begins a new and unknown change”. In Landscape Finder many characters appear on the scene, some with very marked expressions and others with more faded features. Symbolic elements, that the author has always handled skillfully due to his great knowledge of Renaissance painting and symbols in ancient painting, are seen everywhere. The work, all of it in soft shades of white, ochre, green and orange, leads us to the contemplation of a painting within another painting and poses many unknowns. The panel was previously treated by the artist to give it texture before starting to apply color. Here are a few words from the artist: “From a very young age, I began to feel attracted by the art of painting, and as of today it continues being my greatest passion.  The first thing I do when I start a painting is to cover the surface with spots of paint, lacking concrete form. Later, I calmly observe these spots and I begin to perceive images that little by little I transform into concrete forms, for example, a landscape, a fruit, figures, and faces.  During this creative process, I try to respect as much as possible the expressive energy from those original spots, as they are the roots that sustain the work. I like to use different pictorial techniques: coal, graphite, watercolor, acrylic, oil…They are different paths that always convey you to the same destiny: the emotion of expressing with images your own ideas and feelings, your own life experiences”. In 2002, Ediciones Sammer published a monograph about Goyo, the first of a collection entitled "Great Contemporary Artist" which has 240 pages as well as reproductions from most of his work from its beginning until publication. "Buscador de paisajes" appears published on double page 42-43. That same year, The Spanish Philatelic Postal and Telegraphic Service issued a beautiful series of eight self-adhesive stamp depicting reproductions of eight works by Goyo Domínguez which have "music" as a common theme, as well as a stamp to commemorate Christmas.

  • Spanish school. Secretary of Pope Pius V, abbot of Husillos, bishop of Córdoba.
    Located in Firenze, IT
Portrait of Francisco de Reynoso y Baeza.   Secretary of Pope Pius V, abbot of Husillos and bishop of Córdoba. Francisci de Reynoso. Early 17th century. Small-format portrait from the late Renaissance period. Spanish school. Size: Cm 19 x Cm 13.5 Oil on wooden panel. On the back the fine tablet is strengthened (already in ancient times) by a sheet of parchment. About 1600-1610. As often in Mannerist / Late Renaissance portraits, the image of the character is accompanied by the writing that runs at the top, adding a celebratory, historicising touch to the effigy. Let's bring back the sentence here: DON FRANCISCO DE REINOSO. CAMARERO SECRETO IESCALCO PIO QUINTO OBISCOPO CORDOBA. 68 (? O 7?) (1534, Autillo de Campos, Spain - 1601, Córdoba) Francisco de Reynoso was a Spanish cleric, chief chamberlain, and secretary to Pope Pius V, abbot of Husillos, and bishop of Córdoba. He was the fourth of eleven children. His father was the seventh Lord of Autillo de Campos, and his mother was Juana de Baeza y de las Casas, daughter of Manuel de Baeza, a lawyer of the Royal Council and at the Court of Valladolid. Francisco de Reynoso was deeply devoted to the Virgin Mary and showed a strong inclination toward religion and piety from an early age. He studied Latin, arts, and theology at the University of Salamanca. In 1562, he traveled to Rome with his brothers Pedro and Luis. In January 1566, following the death of Pope Pius IV, Cardinal Antonio Michele Ghislieri was elected pope, becoming Pius V. From this period until Ghislieri's death in 1572, Francisco de Reynoso served as his chief chamberlain and secretary. After Pope Pius V died, Francisco de Reynoso returned to Spain and lived for several years in the city of Palencia, where his brother Manuel was a canon. He supported the Society of Jesus when it was established in Palencia, providing alms to the school's clergy and funding chairs of Letters and Theology at his own expense, as well as donating a significant number of books. During the brief outbreak of the Black Plague...

  • Dutch School, 17th Century, Shipping in a Stiff Breeze, a City Beyond
    Located in Stockholm, SE
We are delighted to present a significant piece from the Dutch School, most likely dating back to the late 17th century. This captivating painting showcases the dynamic force of nature with three ships vigorously navigating through stormy waters. The foreground is a scene of nautical struggle, as figures are depicted working intensely with the sails, steering, and bracing against the tumultuous sea. In the serene background, the silhouette of a quaint town emerges, with spires from churches and the outlines of various buildings is visible. This juxtaposition of the calm town against the chaotic foreground serves as a powerful reminder of the unpredictability of life and nature. Dominating the canvas, the sky occupies two-thirds of the painting, filled with brooding clouds that occasionally break to reveal patches of blue. The presence of birds adds a dynamic element to the otherwise ominous atmosphere. While the artist remains unknown, the work is quintessentially Dutch in its execution, with meticulous attention to detail and a profound understanding of maritime life. The painting's oval shape is quite distinctive and is complemented by a suitably antique octagonal black frame, which adds to its historical charm. This piece is a testament to the mastery of Dutch maritime painting...
