Grigory Gluckmann
Composition

About the Item

Grigory Gluckmann Vitebsk 1898 – 1973 Los Angeles "Composition" Signed in Latin (lower right) “Gluckmann” Born in Russia in 1898, Grigory Gluckmann studied in Moscow and eventually escaped to Paris in 1924. He received an enthusiastic welcome from both collectors and critics and participated in many exhibitions in Paris, London, New York, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Dallas. It was Gluckmann’s brilliant technique and unique artistic vision that most effectively displayed his exceptional talent. Grigory Gluckmann worked in the classical style; his figurative paintings are wonderfully evocative of the Rubens forms and Renoir riot of colour. The master’s creative philosophy possesses attributes of the exquisite style of painting, complexity of composition, emotionality and sensuousness of female images, fantasy, wide scheme of reflective colours, and classicality in symbiosis with modern vision. Provenance: The Collection of the Artist; Dalzell Hatfield Galleries, Los Angeles; Private collection, Switzerland. Exhibited: The Carnegie Institute, Pittsburg; The Fifty-sixth Annual American Exhibition: Oil Paintings, The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, 1945; Grigory Gluckmann, 2 February – 28 February, No 1, illustrated in the exhibition’s catalogue, Gump’s Galleries, San Francisco.

Jim’s of Lambertville Fine Art Gallery is proud to offer this work by Frederick Carl Frieseke (1874 – 1939). Frederick Carl Frieseke was a member of the third generation of American painters to inhabit and find inspiration from Giverny, France. His use of bright colors and light, to depict the female figure, defined the style of the Giverny group during his residence, synthesizing aspects of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Born in the United States, Frieseke studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York. In 1898, he moved to Paris to enroll in the Académie Julian, where he studied under Benjamin Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens. During this time, Frieseke also briefly studied with James A. Whistler, who would prove to be a great inspiration in Frieseke’s early works. From Whistler, Frieseke adopted a tonalist palette and a decorative approach to figurative painting. While in Paris, Frieseke’s works were featured at the American Art Association of Paris and in several annual salon exhibitions. His painting, “Before the Mirror...
