1972

About the Item

Colorful and painterly American impressionist portrait of female jockey Robyn Smith Astaire by Robert Zirillo (American, b. 1950), 1972. Signed lower right corner "Zirillo". Presented in a giltwood tone on gesso and wood frame. Image size: 30"H x 24"W. Jockey Robyn Smith Astaire. In 1973 she became the first female jockey to win a stake race in America. In 1980 she married Fred Astaire, left racing and flew Helicopters and then Corporate Jets.. Robert Zirillo , Bob, as a family of friends call him began drawing horses at the age of eight-years old. He became proficient with his drawing ability. Upon returning from a tour of duty in Vietnam in 1968 as a medic in the U.S. Army. Bob received his B.F.A. degree in life drawing from California College of Arts & Crafts in Oakland, California in 1972. I would guess this was his senior thesis project, or one of, when he attended CCAC and graduated in the same year as the painting date. Bob began painting racehorse scenes while attending CCAC in Oakland, California. He also spent many years at Golden Gate Fields Racetrack where had access from the entry gate to the backside barn area. His Impressionistic style of painting captures all the beauty, grace and excitement of thoroughbred racing which brings the canvas to life. Horse racing is not his only passion. Bob paints landscapes, seascapes, still lifes as will as equine polo paintings with all the same color, excitement and movement. His artwork can be found in private collections across the United States. His artwork has been shown in the San Francisco Bay area, Northern and Southern California, East Texas, Kentucky as will as Golden Gate Fields Racetrack, Atlantic City Racecourse, Del Mar Racetrack and Aqueduct Racecourse. He has shown internationally at l'Hippodrome de Deauville-Clairefontaine, Deauville, France in the summer of 2011, 2012 and 2013 and the Segil Fine Art Gallery in Monrovia, California 2014. He resides in North Carolina, USA.
