About the Item
Antique oil on canvas painting depicting the mystical marriage of St. Catherine.
The scene takes place in the foreground, and the Madonna is seen holding the Child toward St. Catherine of Alexandria, kneeling on the left and recognizable by the crown resting on her head, the latter painted with quick, confident brushstrokes.
The saint is about to be mystically married by the child Jesus, who holds the ring finger of her right hand to slip the ring into it, an iconography in use since the Middle Ages, symbolizing the perpetual dedication to virginity of the former princess, in which all women who took vows or otherwise were inspired by a Christian-style marital continence could be recognized.
On either side watch the scene with eager anticipation as the two apostles, one of whom is intent on writing the story, probably related to explicit requests from the commissioner. The brown tones of the Neapolitan tradition are enlivened by splashes of color, such as the women's robes.
