A Night out at the Cinema. Italian Mid-Century Oil on Board.

1950s

About the Item

Mid-century impressionist oil on board of a cinema forecourt. The artist is unknown but the painting is signed bottom right. Quite likely an Italian artist as the oil painting was framed under glass. Presented in its original 1950s wood and material frame. A wonderful piece of social history capturing a moment in time in the 1940s/50s and showing the arrival of the cinema-goers on a rainy day wrapped up in their autumn clothes of typical mid-century style. The figures are loosely but beautifully drawn with great movement; the shrug of the shoulders with hands in pockets as people come in from the rain; the gentleman stopping as he enters to allow the ladies to pass by. The composition is beautifully balanced in both line and colour. The more muted tones of the street and building are offset with lively dashes of colour here and there on the clothing. The overall atmosphere of a cosy evening in the cinema to escape the inclement weather comes across beautifully. A painting that really draws you in.

French oil on board painting of a bucolic picnic in the countryside. Presented in period chip carved wood frame. The artist has been inspired by the painting Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe by Édouard Manet. They have created an intimate scene of four friends sharing a picnic in the countryside. The central character is naked whereas the others are in various stages of undress. The picnic is spread out on a fine white cloth, the wicker picnic basket to one side. A dog looks on from the side-lines hoping for something from the picnic. A very charming and intimate scene colourfully rendered. Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe (The Luncheon...
