  • "Orientalist Interior" Watercolor by Philippe Jullian Ex- D.D. Ryan Estate
    By Philippe Jullian
    Located in Bristol, CT
Elegant & fabulously rare, original Philippe Jullian (1919-1977) (ink signed LR) watercolour depicting a lavish Moorish opium salon interior with a reclining nude portrait on the wall and two monkeys with their turban clad handler. Sagittarius Gallery, NY label inscribed Jullian No. 18 on verso Art Sz: 8 3/4"H x 11 1/8"W Frame Sz: 16"H x 18"W w/ Hermes orange mat & antique bamboo frame Provenance: The estate of D. D. Ryan (1928-2007), noted fashion editor at Harper's Bazaar, an associate of Halston and a regular on best-dressed lists! Another widely appreciated achievement is her association with the creation of Eloise, the fictional little girl who lives at the Plaza Hotel. Eloise began as a character that Kay Thompson, a cabaret singer, portrayed to amuse her friends, of whom Ms. Ryan was one. Ms. Ryan urged her to write a book, put her together with Hilary Knight, the illustrator, and never stopped pushing her to finish the job. The result was “Eloise,” published in 1955 and a best seller the next year, and its popular sequels. “The book would never have existed without D. D. Never,” Mr. Knight said in an interview Thursday. “She would have just dropped it and gone on to something else.” Beyond her historic Eloise moment, Ms. Ryan thrived at the crossroads of New York’s fashion and artistic worlds, seeming to make a statement every time she dressed, almost always in clothes she made herself, always recognizable with her famous precisely stylized eyebrows. Her first job in Manhattan was as an assistant to the photographer Richard Avedon; she was photo editor at Harper’s Bazaar under the legendary editor Diana Vreeland, and she designed the costumes for Stephen Sondheim’s 1970 Broadway musical “Company.” Her social circle included Cole Porter, Andy Warhol, Mr. Sondheim and Truman Capote. When she recommended a new pair of sandals or a piece of costume jewelry — only “really good costume jewelry...

    Located in OOSTERBEEK, NL
Netherlands, 1817-1891 Johannes Bosboom was born in The Hague in 1817. During his lifetime, Johannes Bosboom would become one of the best-known painters of church interiors. His work has been much appreciated over time. He received his training from Romantic masters such as Bart van Hove and Wijnand Nuijen. Johannes Bosboom also took lessons at the Hague Drawing Academy. He showed his preference for the church interior at an early age. He made several journeys in his early years as an artist. In 1835 he visited Germany and in 1837 he traveled to France via Antwerp, where he worked mainly in Rouen and Paris. In 1851 he married the writer Anna Bosboom-Toussaint. He is considered a precursor of the 'Hague School'. The masterful way in which he used light in his church interiors made him one of the most important European painters in this genre. • Brotherly Love
    Located in New York, NY
signed in the lower right Kever watercolor on paper 19 3/16 x 17 1⁄8 inches (49.2 x 43.7 cm.) PROVENANCE Dr. Katherine Kromm Merritt, Stamford, Connecticut, until circa 1990, from whom acquired by Private Collection, Vinalhaven, Maine, until 2015 In the warm morning glow of a country kitchen, a young boy entertains his little sister seated in a high chair. In return her adoring glance speaks volumes. The dramatic angling of the baby’s high chair, whose design harks back to the seventeenth century, animates the scene. Through an economy of means and a limited palette of largely brown and orange, Jacob Simon Hendrik Kever captures the richness of the moment and its idyllic rusticity. Josef Israels was the first to encourage Kever to study painting. He began his training at the Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam, in 1869, studying with Petrus Franciscus Greive until 1872. From 1874 - 1875 he attended the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, also in Amsterdam. From 1878-1879 under the tutelage of Charles Verlat he was enrolled in the Koninklijke Acaemie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp. His subjects included portraits, cityscapes, landscapes, flowers, genre and interior scenes in watercolors, oils, and etchings. Throughout his career he worked in Blaricum, Nunspeet, the province of North Brabant and Eemnes. Although not technically considered a member of the Laren School he also lived there from 1877-1879 and again in 1905-1922. He further maintained an apartment in Amsterdam near the Oosterpark where he resided during the winter months. The area must have constituted somewhat of an artist’s community as his neighbors were Geo Poggenbeek, Nicolaas Bastert and later Willem Witsen...

Individual and collective exhibitions in Łódź, Sopot, Stockholm, Helsinki, New York, Brussels, Paris and Gdansk. “... once there was a beautiful world... And it was a world worth of being acquainted with. Every journey to beautiful worlds, every journey back to past or into non-existence is a hard and dangerous travel. From such an expedition one does not want or sometimes cannot come back. A guide is needed. Someone to guide us showing interesting things but also help in need. Malgorzata Rozmarynowska is that kind of helmsman. She sees everything. The world she welcomes us in is a strange, distressing and yet fascinating place. Jewish and non-Jewish towns that are long gone from our landscapes. And if they are, they ache like tooth gap or a soil burned out to the stone. It is a painful memory, which the mourning of clarinet of klezmer’s band...
