About the Item

Aaron E. Kilpatrick Landscape painter. Born in St Thomas, Canada on April 7, 1872. Kilpatrick was educated in the public schools of Winnipeg and moved to the U.S. in 1892. By 1907 he had settled in southern California and established a commercial art business. He studied locally with William Wendt and often accompanied him on month-long painting excursions. A businessman until middle age, in 1922 he sold his commercial art business and devoted his remaining years to painting fine art. He was the first artist to discover the beauty of Morro Bay. During his art career he received national acclaim and was elected an Associate of the National Academy. He had a studio-home in Eagle Rock near Los Angeles and in Morro Bay until his death in San Luis Obispo, CA on Aug. 17, 1953. He numbered most of his canvases verso with a number circled in black. He used several different signatures, sometimes dating his paintings as well as well as titles. He would sign his paintings : "A.E. Kilpatrick", "Aarron E. Kilpatrick", or, "Aaron Kilpatrick". He ehibited at Del Monte Art Gallery (Carmel), 1910; San Francisco Fine Art Association, 1911-16; Calif.-Panama Expo (San Diego), 1915 (bronze and silver medals); Leonard's Gallery (Los Angeles), 1923 (solo); Biltmore Salon (LA), 1925, 1932, 1935; Carmelita Gallery (LA), 1926; Nicholson Gallery (LA), 1927, 1930; Eagle Rock Artists, 1931. Source: Edan Milton Hughes Artists in California 1786 - 1940, available from the Crocker Museum, Sacramento, CA. This is a wonderful impressionistic canyon scene painted with beautiful subtle color shifts and painterly applied paint. The image is approximately 21 x 25 and 26.5 x 30.5 framed. As in purchased condition and could benefit from a cleaning. The painting is not as bright as the pictures show. I feel digital cameras read thru time as if the painting was cleaner. Frame shows typical wear with age and has been touched up. SELLERS STATEMENT I have been in the art business as an artist and dealer since the early 80's. Almost 40 years now. I primarily concentrate on my own art. My art is derived in a variety of ways. I'm a responder. I respond to light, color, design, etc and I love painting both outdoors on location and in the studio under a controlled environment. I try to convey an idea, mood or just simply a beautiful setting. I'm inspired by a wide variety of subject matter and styles of painting and do not adhere to just one way. My paintings have won numerous awards over the years and have been collected both nationally and internationally. They can be found in three museum collections, the White House Collection and many private collections. I try to photograph each piece as close to the original as I can possibly make it in a general sense trying to convey the colors and light quality. Not all colors reproduce as accurately as others. If when you receive the painting and you feel it is significantly different then what the photos show, please let me know and we can try to work that out.
