About the Item

Adele Riley is a British contemporary land and seascape artist working primarily in acrylic and acrylic inks. Her artistic process usually begins with a loose idea of what she wants to create. She strives to capture the emotional content of the subject, letting the inks create a type of chaos by doing what they naturally want to do. ‘This is an exciting part of the process,’ says Adele, ‘As it always reveals something magical, letting me know what I should do or how I should react next.’ Adele is fascinated by light and colour, believing people connect to colour just as much as to the subject matter. People are drawn to different energies in different colours, and she loves to play with this theory in her work. She often starts her paintings ‘plein air’, sometimes in local forests or on the beaches of Cornwall and Devon, but her passion is to paint intuitively, recalling the light, atmosphere, sounds and feel of a scene. ‘My aim is to capture the essence of a place rather than produce a literal interpretation. I want to create a personal and emotional narrative between my work and the viewer.’ ‘With light there is always colour. I constantly chase light, it’s all consuming. Adele Riley, painter and illustrator, is available for sale online and in our art gallery at Wychwood Art. Adele Riley as a British-born artist living in Gloucestershire, I'm surrounded by some of the most natural and inspiring surroundings in the UK, well-placed to benefit from a huge variety of light, texture, and drama – perfect for what I do. I usually begin by sensing the subject, sometimes using a photo or a sketch to extract weather, light, horizons and shapes to commit the scene to canvas with a variety of media and paint. What I fear most is repetition, so I experiment a lot with media and colour, asking questions of the fresh and the new, trying things out (getting things wrong), but all the time learning and looking to improve. Having studied Illustration at Epsom School of Art, I have always continued to learn and develop from my experiences and travels. Not having a formal arts grounding I found to be a positive thing, as I could appreciate painting by it’s many disciplines. I learned more by challenging the rules of fine art, as well as applying them. It helped drive my enthusiasm until I arrived at a style of painting that represents me as an artist. In addition to painting, I teach art to adults and children both through my business based in Gloucester, and in surrounding local schools. • Uscita - Large Scale Trompe L'oeil Gardenscape Inspired by Ancient Roman Frescos
    By Carol Pylant
    Located in Chicago, IL
"Uscita" takes Inspiration from ancient Italian frescos originally found at the Villa di Livia outside of Rome. The trompe l'oeil frescos were from a subterranean room used for dining. The lush gardens gave the dinner guests the illusion of dining alfresco. Here Pylant took particular notice of the flora and fauna painted over 2000 years ago only to discover they were species that were also present at her then North Carolina studio. The artist adds an architectural element to the gardenscape to suggest a portal from the past into the present. This exploration of the ancient world and its connection to the present is a central theme running through Pylant's work. Carol S.
